Worst Service post rush hour

Following on from 'Sheffd Victoria's' excellent thread about Sunday Services I wanted to open a discussion about Post Rush Hour Services

I would nominate the service from Wigan Wallgate to Kirkby. I'm planning a family day out to Glasgow a week on Monday and one of the party is having to organise a lift home from there because there are no direct trains back to Kirkby after 6.29pm (is that really late?)

NRE suggests one takes a train from Wigan North Western via Liverpool to Kirkby, it takes almost 2 hours and can involve 2-5 changes including a suggestion of walking between Warrington Quarry Bank and Warrington Central, its a good 1 mile walk!

Anyone else got any good ones to add?

Aye, Kirkby does finish very early, I'm not actually sure why, it doesn't get a Sunday service either. From my experience though it isn't that busy, there must have been 20 people tops on my train I got there recently (in the morning rush hour!).

Thanks for the info, not having been there I had to rely on Google Maps that said it was 1 mile to walk and 1.4 miles by road.

FYI, Warrington Bank Quay-Central is nowhere near a mile, it's closer to 3/4 of a mile or so, a 15 minute walk.

0.8 miles walking according to Google maps, which would be rounded to 1 mile on a signpost.

I'm not 100% sure about in Warrington but in Liverpool it's sometimes quickest to not take the most direct route between stations to avoid waiting at too many pedestrian crossings or getting stuck behind crowds of people.

Its only Woodley that really suffers for this lack of service though. People for Fairfield can take a Hadfield service and alight at Gorton or Guide Bridge. I think Merseyrail goes to the evening service too quickly after Rush Hour, although i don't expect the full daytime frequency, i do think the evening service on branches could be every 20 minutes until 9pm.

Marlow - Maidenhead is the worst service I've ever used. I have given up and use a taxi to get to Maidenhead instead.

Ive always been shocked that Hyde Central has no Sunday service

Back to the excellent " Worst service post rush hour " thead, up here in Sheffield land most people moan about the Sheffield Midland to Lincoln services and rightly so, it has a 30 minute service in the morning and evening peak between Retford or Worksop to Sheffield Midland but is only every hour between that, the feeling is that services have been neglected and it needs a 30 minute service all round.

The other service that uses this line is the Sheffield Midland - Gainsborough Central - Cleethorpes service, this runs only on a Saturday Only and has done since 1993/4, this has lead to a lot of anger towards Northern Rail from the Lincolnshire side of the line

How about the direct Sleaford to Spalding service ? There isn`t one after about 17.00.

This is part of the Doncaster - Gainsborough Lea Road - Lincoln - Sleaford - Spalding - Peterborough ( so called service ) run by EMT

Again we have e-mailed EMT over the farse service on this line and yet again its the same old crap of blah blah blah Network Rail fault to many signal boxes = cost, blah blah blah no one uses the services blah blah crap blah

As a resident of Lincolnshire I would support any improvement in this service.
This is a bit off topic but Hull trains were proposing to use the line for direct services to London and even were going to build "Boston Parkway" station on the line at Donington ! Anyone know whats happened to that ? This would mean the line needed to be open more hours.

Even without this I think the service should be made part of a longer cross country route (not necessarily part of the X Country franchise) ie Sheffield or Donny to Stansted. That ought to give it more pax and give it a better future.

On the subject of Boston / Skegness , we have asked EMT to look into running a " Summer Saturday " HST from Sheffield Midland to Skegness, this would call at Worksop, Lincoln Central , Sleaford , Boston & Skegness.

Yes, but from Spalding to LIncoln via Newark means going south to Peterborough (the WRONG direction) changing and then taking an East Coast service to Newark, changing and then EM to Lincoln. I think most would drive ?

That's how things are, and no number of threads complaining about the lack of evening service in Lincolnshire/ the lack of advance tickets in Lincolnshire/ the lack of Sunday morning services in Lincolnshire is going to change anything.

A glimmer of hope as the Department For Transport are reviewing all Lincolnshire lines that are run by Northern Rail as part of the 2014 franchise
