Female Railfans (and why dating is difficult)

I guess this is the ultimate problem for some railfans. It's quite an exclusive hobby; you either "get" it or you don't. And even if you do, the level to which you "get" it can vary substantially from person to person - there is a decisive difference between the girl who has unknowingly become the de facto subject of this thread knowing the difference between (and class numbers of) a 150 and a 158 and someone who is actually the kind of person to enjoy no situation in life other than the sight of something like an HST.

This is why I would say that the railways are a hobby that need to be enjoyed in a means that keeps said hobby in check, and in sync with other things. Speaking personally, I know a lot of girls who appreciate Creative Writing (helped of course by being at a University that offers it as a Degree) but that isn't of much use to pretty much anyone else on here is it? But how easily - and how willingly - can one develop an interest just for the sake of love?

The emboldened part of the above quote is most true! As for creative writing not being much use to many people on here, I don't have an interest to higher education level in it, but I do enjoy it. Not that I've ever made enough effort to put pen to paper (or rather to do it in the 21st century way, fingers to the keyboard) to actually transfer the stuff in my imagination into written/typed format!

As for the query you've made that I've put in underlined text? Well personally speaking, I've easily done it before. Stupendously willingly too. However, that's the easy bit. Unless you can actually find an interest in whatever it is, then you won't be able to keep such an interest faked for long. So to develop an interest for the sake of love and make it a personal, life-long interest? That can take some doing, but it's not impossible!

To be honest it took me ages to get where I am now with a missus that I love(and chloroform) and its really all about trial and error and even if you are a bit shy in speaking to a lass the one thing I always got told is that the only thing they can say is no.

Ahh sod it, theres plenty out there. If they say no move on. Or be happy being single for a while longer whilst getting the confidence to speak to them. And just have some fun.

As for female railfans, I've met a few. In general, though, they tend to be less interested in the technical side and more in the overall experience. Now, I can be as technical as anybody, but what it feels like does make sense. I am generalising, of course.

I feel sorry for you young lads....it was a lot easier to attract females to develop an interest in Trains when the old "slam doors" with individual compartments existed.

After a merry night on the ale in Winchester a young lady made the journey back to Eastleigh a lot quicker......you had to be quick !!!

Whats the name of the Pub right outside the front entrance of Winchester Station ????

The one at Eastleigh was the Home Tavern for the reverse journey.

Although talking about trains in front of a girl might be seen as something which will cause girls to run away, remember that (to the best of my knowledge at least) girls like men who have a real passion for something, whether it's playing guitar or playing football. This is true at uni where (especially at my former Uni) quite a few of the lads only have the following four interests: shagging, football, getting drunk and getting ripped. Being a railway enthusiast might not be in the same popularity stakes as playing in a university rugby team, but it shows you're interested in something, especially if you talk about the history behind the railways and the social geography relating to railways i.e. what encourages people to travel by train etc.

I was friends with one girl (who unfortunately had a boyfriend) in first year and I mentioned to her that I was a railway enthusiast and had volunteered on a minature railway, but she didn't mind and seemed to enjoy talking to a guy with unusual interests. To return the favour, she mentioned she used to be an avid Zelda fan!

Similarly, I have another female friend who doesn't mind me mentioning trains or railways off-the-cuff but then says all I seem to talk about is trains or politics!

All I can say in conclusion is: don't let being a railway enthusiast put you off from asking someone out.

Besides, to add a few plus points, how many of us here are interested in travel? Of the 'seeing new places and experiencing new things' variety, perhaps? Yes, there's a certain element of 'spin' to that, but speaking personally, I've seen almost the whole country and a good deal of the rest of the world through a train window. And there are all sorts of fascinating things to see when you get there.
