Change of reference 'person'

After some advice please.

How would I go about changing one of my nominated 'references' from my applicatin form? I dont really need to go into too much detail as to the reasons why other than saying that the person that I put on my application form may not give me a justified reference due to spite/bitterness/awkwardness etc.

Do you think it would be a good idea to contact H.R and explain?
Or would I contact the Driver Manager direct who interviewed me yesterday?

Or not say anything at all?

OR does anyone know at what stage references are approached?

Anyones opinions would be great please.

I would wait until the reference stage before contacting them if it was me. Not sure who wants the read references whether its HR or the Driver Managers or both but I think it is HR that organise them to be sent out then when they recieve them they send them to the Driver Managers.
I believe references are only sent out after you have passed everything including the medical and the company knows for certain that you can be booked on the training course, it is the final stage before the contract is handed out.

I am in two minds as to whether I should contact H.R sooner rather than later. I guess I could be shooting myself in the foot if I was to say something so soon, especially if the Drivers Manager/H.R dept will not send out for references until way down the recruitment process.

I appreciate your response; anyone else got anything to add?

If I was you I would tell HR immediately and explain the reasons why. You wont be shooting yourself in the foot. They do write to referees and im sure they appreciate it if you told them. Thats what I would do anyway.

They will only ask for references after you have been offered a position. I would just tell them at that stage rather than making a big thing about it with them now before they have offered you the job.

I changed one of mine because one of them would have been so slow in responding and then need reminding so many times before he actually got round to doing it, and I couln't be bothered with all that.

I don't think it is a big thing I wouldn't worry about it too much, HR get that sort of thing all the time.

Thanks for the heads up. The very fact that you've experienced a situation that I may face further down the line eases my worry somewhat. I guess I'll just hang on then until (if) the need arises.

However, as has been said, we don't ask for references until every stage of the recruitment process has been completed and a conditional job offe rhas been made. I suspect that this will be the same almost everywhere, due tot he potential costs of contacting referees for every single shortlisted applicant.

My advice would be to wait and see, and if you have been successful at interview and are offered the job, contact HR straight away. Good luck!
