British made rolling stock coming back?

Good Evening everyone!

I was told that four Class 1800 from Portugal were bought by British to be brought back to England. As far as I know, one or two are bond for the National Railway Museum.

The CP Class 1800 are a series of 10 locomotives built by English Electric, similar to the Class 50 and with Class 37 cab style. Only number 5 is operational and bond for the Museu Nacional Ferroviário, while the other remaining 8 (1809 was scraped due to an accident) were going to be disposed.

Right now only 6 remain intact, while 1806 and 1807 where disposed.

Does anyone know about this? Are there any other details that I'd like to know?


BTW, if 4 Class 1800 are to be brought back to England, wouldn't it be a good idea to bring one or two Class 1400 as well?

One restriction with running them in this country is the wider loading gauge. They could probably run on the Nene Valley railway (which is continental gauge), apart from that they'd probably be restricted to stretches of track which don't station platforms, or other structures close to the track such as signal posts.

They would need to be regauged too, as Portugal uses the Iberian gauge of 5ft 6in.

I wasn't told that these units are to run around the British rails. By now they may only be static pieces.

Anyway, I guess that both Class 1800 and Class 1400 can be fitted with their British counterparts bogeys, Class 20 and Class 50.

For now this is what we know:

1804 -FMNF
1805 -FMNF
1806 -Scraped
1807 -Scraped
1808 -UK
1809 -Scraped
1810 -UK

Even if this is happening, which seems unlikely, i can't imagine the NRM being interested - they don't have sufficient undercover storage/display for their existing collection let alone a Portugese 1800. Perhaps they're being looked at for spares?

Apparently it is. One of which has been brought as a spares donor (Power Unit) for 50044, one to go to the Nene Valley (rebogied presumably). The rest, probably spares too.

They have been bought to break for spares mainly for class 50 operations.

There's one thing...

Class 20 are unmistakably sisters of Class 1400, being respectively 8SVT MkII and 8CSVT MkII.

Class 50 and Class 1800 have the same motor, a 16CSVT, but they sound different. Class 1800's engine sounds more like Class 40's 16SVT MkII.
