Best spend them now, as the company is likely to go into administration any time soon, reports are saying!

Another retailer disappears from the high street.

Telegraph said:
Private equity company OpCapita bought the troubled electrical retailer for just £2 eight months ago, but has been under increasing pressure from suppliers to pay upfront for stock before the critical Christmas trading period.

Reports suggest that the pressure has grown so high that Deloitte has been lined up as an administrator, potentially leaving 6,000 jobs under threat.

But shoppers could also be in danger, as any unused gift vouchers may not be honoured if the company does enter administration. It would be up to the Deloitte to decide whether or not the vouchers would remain valid, but they would be a low priority behind other creditors.

BBC financial journalist Paul Lewis warned on Twitter this morning that anyone with vouchers should hurry to a store while they remain open and cash them in.

Martin Lewis, founder of moneysavingexpert.com and a Telegraph columnist, added that it was best to use them in-store rather than online, so that they had the goods in their hands instantly.

BBC said:
Comet, the electrical retailer, is close to going into administration, putting about 6,000 jobs at risk, reports say.

The company, bought by private equity firm OpCapita last year for just £2, has struggled from the downturn in consumer spending.

Two weeks ago, OpCapita said it was examining a number of potential bids for 240-strong chain.

But there are reports Comet will appoint an administrator imminently.

The Financial Times and trade journal Retail Week said that OpCapita had lined up Deloitte to act as administrator, which would run the business as a going concern while it assesses options for sales, closures and liquidation.

Comet was sold to OpCapita last February by Kesa, which also struggled to turn around the business.

Sir John Clare, formerly chief executive of Dixons Retail, joined the business as chairman on the same day the Comet sale to OpCapita was finalised.

Sir John had argued that the business could be revived, despite analysts' forecasts at the time of his appointment pointing to operational losses of £35m.

Should Comet go under, it would be one of the biggest retail casualties since the demise of Woolworths in 2008. Other recent High Street collapses have included JJB Sports, Clinton Cards, Blacks Leisure, Game, and Peacocks.

America's Best Buy recently pulled the plug on 11 giant electricals stores after failing to make inroads into the UK market.

The economic downturn and pressure on consumer spending has led many people to put off purchases of big-ticket items such as TVs and large appliances. Sales have such items have also moved increasingly online.

Comet was founded in 1933 as a business charging batteries for wireless sets. It opened its first store in 1968, in Hull, and was bought by Kingfisher in 1984, which expanded the Comet brand into one of the most familiar names on the High Street.

Looks like it may be following the short lived "Best Buy" into the annals of electrical retailing history !!

If you want to buy their debts to suppliers and expensive leases on their retail stores ;)

This is a bad thing. There is already a severe lack of competition in the audio-visual and white goods markets. Anyone who (like me) doesn't wish to give their money to the awful Dixons/Curry's group doesn't have that many bricks-and-mortar places left.

Tell me about it - We've brought our Dyson Vac & Hotpoint washing machine from there several years ago. No problems whatsover with either, and if and when there's been any other issue with any other products brought from there, it's been fixed / replaced / refunded with no issues whatsover. Reccently looking for a new Microwave, and brought one from Curry's. Were now on microwave Number 4 within a month. Grrrrr :( Shame really.

The customer service in my local store has always been appalling, and my most recent electrical purchases I've made from Tesco or Asda and saved around 20% on average against Comet prices for the same make and model! My hotpoint washing machine I bought arount 6 months ago was 40% cheaper from Tesco than Comet for the identical model!

I find Richer Sounds to be very helpful and keenly priced. My 32" Full HD Toshiba was £240 plus £24 for a 5 year warranty. They don't have anywhere near as many outlets as Currys or Argos but they seem to be opening more all the time. If the nearest to you is in an unfamiliar town they upload maps and pictures to the site to help you find it as well as publishing the store telephone number.

One thing I did like about Comet is the staff were always helpful with my technophobe mother. She'd go in with an idea of what she wanted (or written instructions from me!) and come out with exactly what she was after and never once did they try and push insurance on her!
