ITV Program "Off the Rails" Tonight at 7:30pm

This programme included some controversial opinions, but they weren't left unqualified. The fare comparison between German and British trains was balanced by the assertion that British commuters have more choice of faster trains. (Make of that what you will.) Overall, for a short documentary, this was fair and informative, and far better than anything recently on TV. The case for whose fares are actually more expensive seems to be endlessly debatable, but it seems to me that comparing walk-up prices, advance bookings and season tickets on a like-for-like basis is reasonable. Simply finding the most expensive journey on one network and the cheapest on another achieves nothing.

we all are, its amazing how so many people are now "victims". if it is true may he rot in hell but I dunno smells like the press making a story out of hearsay and rumours and people jumping on the bandwagon (sorry I know its Off Topic)

Do you mean that child abuse victims are all just jumping on the bandwagon and making it up?... that would be a very dodgy assertion? Just because there are large numbers involved doesn't mean it isn't real.

I have a few old friends who suffer something akin to post traumatic stress disorder, because they were sexually abused as children. Sexual abuse is very real! Thankfully we are finally waking up to how pervasive it is/was in society. Hopefully in future things will be identified sooner rather than later.

Though I think the press do have a lot to answer for also re why they didn't publish anything earlier, and yes it does reach a level of hysteria when 'paediatricians' get attacked because knuckle draggers equate them with 'paedophiles'... But freedom of the press is a difficult balance & I wouldn't want to live in a country which didn't have press freedom....

This is flawed logic - there are a lot of people in this country who neither or rarely use the welfare system either and that costs many many times more than the rail network does. Even those who do not use rail benefit from it. How much more congested would the roads be? How much more expensive would products and services from major cities be if suddenly everyone commuting into, say, London, couldnt use rail to do so, etc etc.

Take for instance the train services from Farnborough, there are 4 per hour. During the peak hours these are fairly full. if you were to put the 600 people per train (2400 people) you would need a duel carriageway running at full capacity to cope with that number of people (assuming 1 person per car). That road would still not cater for the other services along that line which don't call there.

By the time you get to Woking you'd probably need a large road (even with 3 or 4 people per car) and I'd dread to think how big the road would need to be at Clapham junction. You'd also have to flatten half of London to widen the existing roads to be able to cope with all the extra traffic.

I very rarely travel by train, but I know that even the village I live in would need a much bigger road network to cope with the extra traffic or would have major traffic problems if there was no train station.

Unfortunately the gentleman in the car represents a strand of opinion that seems to have held the political class in Westminster in it's thrall for several decades leading to years and years of bad policy.

There at least appear to be signs that the political class may be changing in this respect.

I have no doubt there are real victims down to Jimmy Savile and hope he rots in hell for it, however the numbers are getting to a point that there isn't a person he molested/abused in the 60's/70's/80's thats the point being made

If there's only £4m that has been frozen, that's not going to share out to all the victims very well.

I believe that people will need to provide some evidence, so I wonder how many victims that appeared in the last few weeks will 'drop out'. Obviously claiming they can't go through with it due to stress etc.

Going by the numbers, I'm now beginning to think that on the balance of probabilities, he must have been doing something - but I don't believe that all of these claims are genuine. Now we're seeing other people arrested, suggesting there will be hundreds of new victims magically appearing saying that they were molested by them too (and maybe they'll have a bit more money).

He didn't abuse me, but I was afraid to come forward in case nobody believed me
