Advanced ticket change - 1hr earlier TODAY

If I've got an advanced first single for the 11:50 Bournemouth - Waterloo, is there any way to excess this to a standard class single on the 10:50 today? Or do I just buy a new ticket?

New advance fares won't be available now.
Can you tell us if you have a railcard, how much you paid and if you will be making a return journey?

You can upgrade it to an Off Peak Day Single by paying the difference between the cost of the new ticket (£45.80) and the price you paid, plus a £10 admin fee.

It will probably be cheaper to buy a new ticket. You have a PM with a suggestion

For some reason I'm getting £45.70 for a super off-peak single and no off-peak single for Bournemouth - Waterloo?

Most fares are reversible so it does not matter which direction you look them up. In this case the fares are not reversible. I have corrected the post above. Not that it makes much difference - it's a horrendous price.

Yes but when you compare it to the anytime (day) return it looks positively reasonable. Unfortunately this is what happens when you use a commuter TOC on one of their key routes into London.

Thanks all (and yorkie for the PM - will remember that for next time) Ticket office were willing to switch it but only to a 1st as I had a 1st advance. Platform was pretty wedged (train went out pretty full) so decided to grab a paper and enjoy first class on the way back since I'm not in a rush

Yes fares seem pricey - especially compared to something like London - Lancaster. First advanced are a good deal though especially Fri PM train was full and standing right the way down.

Just think without an advance you would have paid £161 for the anytime return - the off-peak day being £85 and there being no off-peak return fare.

Or like those that don't earn 6 figure salaries or the few that can find a good deal you might have gone in standard.

Well that's incorrect and I'd consider complaining to the TOC that was running the ticket office.

The guidance available to ticket office staff, 'Advance fares - Frequently Asked Questions' says:

Q08 - A passenger wishes to change their booking. Are there any boundaries by how much they can bring forward or put back an Advance ticket booking?

A: Changes can be brought forward or set back only for as far ahead as train reservations are open – normally around 12 weeks. The original ticket must be presented at the time the change request is made.
Some station scenarios:

A First Advance changed the day before to travel on a different train for which no Advance Ticket type is available must pay up to the cheapest appropriate walk up single e.g. FOS, GFS, plus the £10 fee. First advance may also be changed to a Standard Class walk up ticket. Remember to cancel the old reservations.

This decision was incorrect. The relevant rule supplied to ticket offices is:

Q17 - Can you downgrade from First Class to Standard Class?

A: For example, if the customer holds a First Advance and wants to change it as cheaply as possible, could they just change it to a cheaper Standard Advance, and pay the £10.00 charge? Yes, again maximum flexibility before the booked train departs, no flexibility afterwards. There is no refund or credit of the difference between the First Class and Standard Class fare (See Conditions in Q05 above).

My original ticket was £21.80 (16-25 discounted) - so should have been a new single at £30.15 - £21.80 + £10.00 - £18.35. Which I would have probably paid.

That's annoying that he gave the wrong advice. I'll definitely drop them a note - the clerk seemed competent and resolved a friends issue OK so sure it was an honest mistake.
