Hi,
Next Wednesday my nephew wants to go watch the trains at Basingstoke with myself & his gran, going he wants us to take the 1020 Southern service from Havant to Southampton Central changing to the 1115 Cross Country service to Basingstoke.

National rail enquires says to be able to do this we need to have off-peak day returns with Route of ticket ANY PERMITTED shown. We would be buying tickets at Havant on the day.

My question is what routes would be valid for us to come home by, would we have to come home by the same route?

Thanks
Steve

This ticket would allow you to travel either via Eastleigh (including Southampton if you like), or via Guildford and Reading.

It is valid on maps PD+MW which permit both routes.

You are quite at liberty to go one way and come back the other.

Permitted routes Basingstoke - Havant are:
  • the shortest route. I think this is Basingstoke, Micheldever, Winchester, Shawford, Eastleigh, Hedge End, Botley, Fareham, Portchester, Cosham, Bedhampton, Havant.
  • any route not more than 3 miles longer than the shortest route, and
  • a mapped route. Mapped Permitted Routes are shown on map combination MW+PD and are via any route on map MW from Basingstoke to any intercept point(s) with map PD, then via any route within map PD to Havant, all without passing through any station more than once.

Hi,
Wow, I know I said quick query but I didn't expect replies that quick! I thought Woking may have been allowable if there was a problem towards Eastleigh but I wouldn't have thought via Reading & Guildford would be valid.

Thanks again

I'm struggling to work that out - what am I missing?

Hmm, I'm not sure either. From the map of the SE routes it doesn't look unreasonable but it's not mapped as you say, and about 15 miles longer than the shortest route.

NRE and WebTIS both suggest it for a HAV<>BSK query, showing as valid on one ticket. I don't think it would be questioned (certainly seems more reasonable than via Reading).

I think it would be ok to go via Salisbury as follows:

HAV Havant
SOU Southampton Central
SAL Salisbury
BSK Basingstoke

or alternatively

HAV Havant
FRM Fareham
ESL Eastleigh
ROM Romsey
SAL Salisbury
BSK Basingstoke

But i agree not via Woking

This bit about going through a station more than once. If instead of Havant to Basingstoke it was Bedhampton to Basingstoke and via Eastleigh was the route decided on. As there is no direct service between Bedhampton and Fareham. Would Bedhampton to Havant be a permissable first leg then back through Bedhampton to Fareham or without multiple tickets would it mean change at Hilsea. Also as not all trains stop at Hilsea would change at Fratton be permitted?

Also there is a general rule as follows:

GROUP STATIONS
Some stations are grouped together to improve interchange between trains
by offering customers access to a wider choice of train services and station
facilities. A customer may travel via any station in such a group, including
doubling back, provided that the group is on one of the permitted routes
between their origin and destination stations. This extended availability is for
interchange purposes only and does not apply where the origin or destination
stations are part of a group

This can be applied to Portsmouth Routeing Group which comprises:

BEDHAMPTON
COSHAM
FAREHAM
FRATTON
HILSEA
PORTCHESTER
PORTSMOUTH HARBOUR
PORTSMOUTH & SOUTHSEA

and Southampton Routeing Group:

MILLBROOK
REDBRIDGE
SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT
SOUTHAMPTON CENTRAL
ST DENYS
SWAYTHLING

Even if via Salisbury is valid (I haven't had time to check the Guide) unfortunately SWT guards will object to travel that way so prepare for an argument and don't expect Salisbury Station managers to support your argument as they back their guards every time regardless of the facts.

I agree. Both of these are permitted routes. But only if you feel like a battle with the on-train staff and the station staff, and are prepared to pay for a new ticket and claim it back or accept a UPFN and challenge it several times :-x
