Glasgow to York via Edinburgh

Being a frugal Scotsman I have a ticket for Friday part of which is advance from Edinburgh [stn]EDB[/stn] to york with EC, the other is the glasgow to edinburgh piece. Can I assume I can board the XC train from central that goes to Edinburgh [stn]EDB[/stn] and use the ticket or do I have to use it on Scotrail , ie are there any restrictions?

Firstly, Edinburgh's three letter code is EDB not EDI.

If you have a single ticket covering the entirety of your journey from Glasgow to York, with a reservation from Edinburgh to York, then you can only travel on unreserved services between Glasgow and Edinburgh. So no, you can't use CrossCountry.

Surely if the ticket is (as I assume) "XC and connections" an XC service from Glasgow to Edinburgh would be a valid connecting service?

If in doubt I would suggest asking the TM for permission to travel before the service departs central - to be honest I'd be shocked if they said no unless the train was mobbed. (Though it would be a mad dash to get to Queen Street in item to get over to Edinburgh in time if they did say no).

If the ticket is routed EC & Connections, I agree with CompactDstrxion. The train companies have a set of Advance Fares FAQs. The relevant one is:

Q25. Can passengers on an advance ticket travel on earlier connecting trains?

A. Yes if it is non-reservable, no if it is reservable.

Most guards would probably be fine with it. The T&Cs state that you may use "appropriate" connecting trains. If you can obtain an itinerary on the National Rail website that has the XC service you want to take, then that would give your argument more weight that the train is an "appropriate" connecting service. However, do not be surprised if the XC TM disagrees and enforces the policy of only allowing such tickets non non-reserveable trains (as defined in The Manual, and quoted in the post above this one by John @ Home).

I would advise you approach the TM before boarding, show the ticket, and ask if you may take that train as your connecting service.
