Well yes, but if we had Shinkansen routes along the main lines this woudl reduce the travel time on that route to somewhere in the vicinity of 3hrs or less depending on how many intermediate stops there were.
Which probably erases most of flying's time advantage.
Would there be High Speed routes along all main lines? While I could see a full London to Scotland HSL pushing the budget carriers off SE-Scotland (BA would probably keep flying to feed their Long Haul) things like SW-Scotland are not really going to get the passenger numbers to justify an HSL (even if XC ran classic to Brum and HSL North) so maybe those routes might be better left to Turboprops/E-Jets.
