Has anyone else noticed a sudden rise in SPAM emails this past few days?

I am getting an email on average of one every twenty minutes at the minute and they all are from "Mail Daemon" (specifically a Yahoo one) reporting a failed message.

I know full well that they are not genuine as the content of "my message" is just a load of random letters, I assume trying to imitate some encryption but the biggest give-away is the fact these are originating from yahoo dot RU, ES, IT etc...

To be honest my email service is putting them all in my spam folder but it just seems very odd that there is this new stream of it. On the plus side it's an improvement from the good old pills, watches and girls "on offer". I'm guessing that the "Robert Soles" behind the latter have had that stream shut down so have started this new one.

Yahoo's SMTP servers send a massive amount of spam from yahoo addresses to my SMTP server, and reporting them to them makes no difference. I suspect that spammers can easily make accounts with them and them use the credentials to send spam through their SMTP servers.

What you are experiencing is known as a joe-job. This is when a spammer sends a load of spam, from your email address to other people. The "From" address is easy to forge in emails. When some of these emails bounce, you get them returned to you from mailer-daemon or postmaster. This will most likely stop after a few days when they choose some other address to forge emails from.

That does make sense, my actual account is not a yahoo address but is part of a yahoo merger with BT, though it would be using the same system. I have had emails in the past to me "from me".

I haven't used an email application in years, for extra security as I didnt like the idea of "bad" things getting onto my computer. So it always was a puzzle as to how they have my address.

I'm only in a handful of Gen groups but they are very quick at spotting spam and blocking the accounts. As for the blocking of these, I reported the first one as spam and while I'm still getting plenty of them they are now going into the spam folder right away.

The most frustrating thing about spam is that some genuine messages will get incorrectly flagged, though with these ones its painfully obvious whats fake - especially since I haven't sent any emails in quite a while.

I've never heard the term "joe-job", many moons ago when I was still into computers I was well up on technology but now it seems that technology just annoys me :/

They can get your email from brute force/dictionary attacks and getting lucky.

Yep i have found that they is a rise is Spam Emails as i left this morning after clearing 10 spam emails i got during the night and then when i came home at 5pm i had got 46 Spam emails from 8am to 5pm.

Yep, me too. I would also be very interested to know how they got hold of my email address since I haven't joined any politics-related mailing lists! Only possible explanation is that an Anonymous (the hacktivist group supposedly organising it) member has been harvesting email addresses from various sources

I've had two emails about 'Operation Jubilee' and they've both ended up in my 'spam' folder. Since I use Gmail it means lots of them have been sent out.

Yes I got one last Tuesday and one yesterday, both entering my Inbox instead of my Spam folder The first one was very brief and the second one was a massive prose about how they want to redistribute land take money from the rich (it actually read somewhat like a Communist manifesto), and will use all the power a standard civilian has stop police from interrupting them, even if it means, apparently, using a policeman's cuffs to citizen's arrest an officer.

So now Anonymous think all laws ought to be based on the Bible? Shows you can't take a group of bored anarchists & hackers seriously. One that used to do the rounds on a regular three-monthly time basis was purportedly from the parcel carriers/couriers UPS stating they had a query with a delivery addressed to you.

Many companies were tricked by this in Britain at first.
