Thanks for that. Booked it. We are leaving on the 07:43 dep from Köln Hbf. to Brüssel Süd on train ICE 18 so it is handy to be in walking distance of the station.

Suplementary question: is it possible to get a "proper hot breakfast" on this ICE train? Any comments/reviews on the breakfast offers available would be welcome.

Stopped over twice this year in a small-ish family-run or small chain hotel just round the corner, Brandenburger Hof, http://www.brandenburgerhof.de
Good size breakfast, not too expensive (€40-50 or so if you don't want en suite), friendly staff, quiet street, can't see the station though.

Cristall Hotel is 5 minutes walk from the rear entrance of the station. Clean, comfortable, friendly and good breakfast. Highly recommended. I have stayed there 6 or 7 times.

Chocolate museum (and great cafe by the Rhine)
Boat trip on the river?

I usually go at Christmas when there is lots more going off.

Try asking at the tourist info office opposite the Dom - they are usually very helpful.

Cologne has a variety of museums. It would take you a fortnight to visit them all.

Been there, if I remember rightly there was a cracking bier halle called Schumachers (?) in Düsseldorf's Altstadt.

Haha, no. Elephants are not allowed on the Schwebebahn anymore.

My brother and I stayed in this much pictured hotel:

Cologne was great! we looked at Dom (the tower seemed closed), took the cable car, looked round modern art museum, went to football ground (again un-explainabley closed!, as was Wagner's opera house in Bayreuth)

The Ice was great but we loved the IC with full restruant car. Food good served on china and beer on tap or out of bottle in proper glasses.

all i can say is enjoy and don't go the brirtish buffet car too soon after (i had to get a tinof beer which subsequently fell off the counter and she had to give me another!)
