Morning all!
Using the websites directs you to specific trains so you can't get a fare for a train that doesn't stop where you want to start from!!!!!

I have a London Bedford season (annual) and on Friday 28th wish to go to Stockport. Timewise the 17.55 from St.P is best though it doesn't stop at BDM but it'll get me into SHF for 20.03 in time to take advantage of the 20.11 to SPT for £5. I understand I can use my season on the STP-SHF train coupled with a single BDM-SHF.
What fare would be charged for that portion and is there a cheaper train a little bit later?

Thanks

Your single BDM-SHF is just a standard single ticket priced as if you bought this ticket on its own between BDM and SHF. There is nothing different about the ticket due to the fact you're using it in conjunction with a season. A SVS OFF-PEAK S is priced at £46.90 (By any train after 0900. M-F).

The rules for combining Season tickets with other tickets are listed under section 19c of the NRCoC . In the case of combining a season with non-seasons, the train does not need to actually stop at the changeover of tickets.

I guess you have checked whether 8 minutes is an allowable connection at Sheffield Midland?

If not, then a Bedford-Stockport ticket is £63.80 (which allows you to go any not London route that is permitted, ie up the MML to chesterfield/sheffield, or Bedford-Bletchley then up the WCML, or £58.70 for route Chesterfield only. These are return prices by the way, so £45 plus £5 each way isn't actually that great.

Also note that your London-Bedford season is valid via Bletchley (source: this thread, so if you wanted you could travel Euston-Stockport on virgin, using either the £63.80 ticket mentioned above or a £58.00 bletchley-stockport return - though note that the latter would tie you into returning via Bletchley - in either situation the train wouldn't need to call at Bletchley.

Also note that I haven't checked the times of the off-peak restrictions on the tickets above.

Currently Virgin are offereing a FIRST CLASS Advance ticket @ £49 on the 1920 from Euston (arr Stockport @ 2116). Of course, with an Advance you need to be certain your plans won't change.

You don't need to be certain - you can change it at the station before travel is due to commence to another Advance or an appropriate walk-up fare.

Well yes, but that would then make the cost considerably more than the £46.90 Bedford - Sheffield fare already quoted.

The alternative option is to buy a £19 Super Off Peak Return London Midland Only Bletchley to Stoke on Trent, and an £8.80 Virgin Trains Only Anytime Day Single Stoke on Trent to Stockport. Total £27.80. Depart Euston 18.29. Arrive Stockport 21.55. If you are doing a return journey then it's another £8.80, total £36.60. When you arrive at Stoke on Trent, catch the SECOND train from the same platform.

I'm not sure my London Bedford season is OK for Bletchley as its a London Thameslink which probably restricts to the MML.
However, I like the idea of the LM to Stoke.

My return will be on Sunday evening (which stuffs the via BLY) and I've already identified the via SHF as a goodone with £8 SPT SHF and £19 SHF BDM

Thanks for the ideas.

My season is Bedford stations to London Thameslink so would have thought that was MML only not any other route. If Euston Bletchley is an allowed routing that would be great.

Good point. Euston isn't a member of the London Thameslink pseudo-group, so is the ticket valid from there? Interesting question.

None of the maps between Bedford Group and London Group via the WCML takes you to a station which is part of the London Thameslink designation, therefore you cannot use a Bedford Station - London Thameslink ticket to go via the WCML. That is my interpretation.

You have not said whether you wanted a single or return, which is why some of the price comparisons in this thread have been inconsistent.

If your ticket is to London Thameslink rather than London Terminals, which you did not state in your OP, then you can pay an extra £7 and buy a £26 London Terminals to Stoke on Trent. This is still cheaper than the other options.

As I understand it a Bedford Stations - London Thameslink ticket is valid as per Bedford Stations - Elephant & Castle.

But no such tickets are sold, so I think you would have to use the shortest route, which wouldn't be via Bletchley....

Bedford - Macclesfield via Chesterfield ( and therefore Stockport) is slightly cheaper SVR at £56.00

A related question if I may.... a seemingly cheaper option is the LM London to BHM then CrossCountry to SPT but with a Cross Country ticket LEI to SPT with change at BHM (£5 cheaper than BHM to SPT!).
Is picking up the train half way through the ticketed journey allowed?

It depends on the restriction code of the particular ticket. Most tickets allow this, but some do not. If you look up the ticket on NRE or http://www.brfares.com/ it'll show you the restriction code and will say if Break of Journey is not permitted (left hand column)
