Hi all,

Currently living in Ormskirk, but need to come back to York next weekend, but also visit Doncaster for a couple of nights.

As I need to be in York on Friday and Monday, it makes sense for me to use that as my ticket destination, and just get an open return to Doncaster to use between.

Cheap tickets don't seem too forthcoming for the time being though, so I wondered if you guys had any ideas?

I've got a 16-25 railcard.

Ormskirk to York - offpeak return: £31.20
Burscough Bridge to York - offpeak return: £21.85

So - going from Burscough Bridge (a four minute train/bus ride from Ormskirk) proves cheaper yet again. I use the BCB-MEX route when returning home to Mexborough, and it's cheaper than going via Liverpool.

So £21.85 isn't bad at all for an open return, but I wondered if you had any splitfare tricks up your sleeve? I'd quite like to do the Preston - York route again at some point, through Lancashire, but that takes longer and is probably more expensive than the quicker TPExpress routes.

Timing-wise, I would like to be in York by roughly 1pm on the Friday, and need to leave York at about 4-5pm on the Monday.

Your other option is to look into TransPennine Express Advance tickets between Liverpool and York, and fill in the gaps with Off-Peak walk-up tickets.

You can do Ormskirk - York for £26.55 travelling on the direct Preston - York service, splitting at Leeds. Presumably that will work out at a similar price to Burscough Bridge to York for £21.85 after factoring in bus/train fares from Ormskirk - Burscough Bridge.

Or even Rufford-York at £19.55 open return (via Burnley) plus two singles Ormskirk to/from Rufford at £2.30 each time.

It seems to me that
  • two £2.30 Railcard Singles Ormskirk <-> Rufford, plus
  • a £17.95 Railcard Anytime Return Rufford - Doncaster route via Leeds
meets all the OP's requirements, using Preston Lancs as the appropriate Routeing Point for Rufford and map combination NC+TP+ER, which allows Ormskirk - Rufford - Preston, then:
  • NC: Preston - Blackburn - Halifax Group
  • TP: Halifax Group - Bradford Group - Leeds Group - York
  • ER: York - Doncaster.

That looks fantastic, thanks!

So that would enable me to do:

Friday: Ormskirk-Preston-York-Doncaster
Saturday: none
Sunday: none
Monday: Doncaster-York-Preston-Ormskirk

Sounds good to me - thanks!

URGENT:

Forgive me for doubting you, but looking at the ATOC website, it appears that Leeds to Doncaster group stations is only valid via JL.

Also - the ER map does not show Leeds-York as a routeing option.

I'm not sure a Rufford-Doncaster(via Leeds) ticket is valid via York...
