Good evening,

All being well I am visiting the Dean Forest Railway on Saturday 15 Sep on a special charter train from the main line. I have not been to that area before.
Does anyone have any suggestions for somewhere to go to get a decent lunch and beer/wine? Tks.

Miners Arms at Whitecroft? About 2 mins walk from Whitecroft station. Just a suggestion but there are a couple in Parkend as well; The Fountain and The Woodman.

Wish I was there to see the Thumper but I'm away.....

Say hi to my mob on D9521!

Thank you for the information here, I shall try one or two of the pubs you mention. They all look good from their websites.

I think Norchard is the main station. Are there any shops there or elsewhere along the line selling new or used 00 gauge models & odds and ends.?

There used to be a model shop in Lydney town centre (Use Lydney town station) but it had closed down when I went looking for it last year.

Norchard is indeed the main site. I think the gift shop at Norchard sells model railway bits and pieces?

Hope you enjoy your visit, remember to watch out for the deer and wild boar!

Was wondering how long it would be before that subject was brought up :lol:I would strongly recommend the Lydney Cafe Delight in Lydney Town Centre (come out of the station, turn right down the high street, past Lloyds chemist, and Ruddys chip shop, and walk down the ally way next to Kaplans, and it is at the end of it), some very food in there, regardless of what meal you want  I would be coming to this gala, but the absence of the 27 and 73 from the line up has put me off completely.

Yesterday's visit on the HDL train was great indeed. I did get about an
hour in Parkend and went to the Fountain Pub which was very good and so close to the station. All the staff on the FDR where very welcoming and it runs through some lovely scenery. On the main line we had excellent running indeed, especially on the way home.

You seem to have missed a good day. As if the visiting "Thumper" wasn't enough, D9555 returned to traffic after a 3(?) year overhaul. I would have loved to have been there and seen the two Bears in action. Sadly it was not to be.
