Hello all ,
I travel home a lot with and usualy leave it last min as all squaddies do. This time however a have been more on the ball and booked a London to Glasgow First class ticket including forces rail card for just 30.00 ( seems a right bargain ). Its with east coast , what can a excpect from first class realy ,food wise and obv be after a few tinnies ? My train leaves london at 11.30 on a thursday . Ive read little snippets that the advance tickets are shoved into there own carriage ? I can live with that as the suited and booted have prob paid throu the nose for theres. Sorry if its a bit long winded and been answered elsewere.

Go and plonk yourself in an unreserved seat in coach K (J on diesel trains) if you want a 'better' food and drink service.
As the 1130 is not one of the fastest services, you are perhaps more likely to get more frequent and offers of food and drink due to the intermediate stops.
It is the "All Day" menu, so you'll be looking at hot food like pie and salad, sandwiches, cake/crisps. Drinks should be frequent rounds of tea and coffee, as well as a few passes of the cold drinks trolley from which you can select beer (330ml cans), wine, or spirit doubles.

Are you sure this is with East Coast? I'd expect this to be a Virgin service from Euston.

Could well be. The xx30 from Euston go to Glasgow (or Lancaster) as you rightly point out.

The xx30 from Kings Cross typically go to Newcastle, but the 1130 is extended as far as Edinburgh. If this is the case, it'll be that and then a suitable connection to Glasgow via the Central Belt. This will be overall slower but may have thrown up cheaper fares as there is more capacity on that route.

I would imagine you would have a good chance at 3 rounds of hot food, as much tea as you cna drink, and something between 3-6 chances at the free drinks (as the trolley has to come back through the carriage)

You will probably be able to eat and drink your ticket cost with ease.

3 rounds of hot food is perhaps slightly ambitious - if the same crew stays on to Newcastle (likely) or even Edinburgh (possible) they are often quite careful not to offer more than one round of hot food (and, on occasion, no further "mains" at all!) if they recognise you've already been served in a previous service round.

That said, I'm not sure I could eat three lots of pork pie or whatever - due to both the heaviness, the healthiness and the fact I'd be getting bored.

I agree that tea and coffee will be aplenty, and that there is likely to be four passes of the cold drinks trolley. Whether or not you are able to procure two drinks per run (one there and one back) seems to vary dependent on crew, your position on the train and the number of full moons before the next equinox - but I would be interested if you could report back your success here. :)

Three rounds might be a little ambitious actually, assuming a crew change two should eb possible, and if one of the crews is feeling nice you might squeeze a third in.

I think 4 drinks is probable, however I havent checked my lunar calendar yet..

... and the 4 cans...
No chance of being allowed 4 cans!

If you want to hear of experiences, please see East Coast First Class service (you may wish to skip to the later posts, to read of more recent experiences).

I can't understand Butts' post at all, but I am guessing he is referring to this event which occurred on 17 July.

London-Edinburgh "slow" xx30 departure it's quite likely to get 4 cans - service rounds after London, Peterborough/Newark, York and Newcastle, no?

Neither can I and I'm the author

Seriously East Coast Directors Forum is a chance to ask questions about any aspect of the service. I asked "were you allowed to ask for a drink outside of the regular runs by asking a staff member" - the answer was yes.

We have differing interpretations of the word "regular". ;)

As long as it's not a London crew throughout, and there's additional calls at places like Peterborough then you have a chance!;)

Perhaps we should produce our own coloured timetable booklet showing which crew does which service? You don't need to differentiate between the others, the London ones just need highlighting to be avoided at all costs.

On a trip from Edinburgh to London 1st class earlier this year I had 3 cans of cider and one of cola (but was offered another cider).
