Hope the 08s work this time - they were plugged from last year's gala.

Keep an eye on http://www.pleg.org.uk/. NYMR refused to publish a timetable with loco allocations on their website last year and wanted something like £3 for it. PLEG published it free of charge.

Ask nicely, rather than make the kind of childish comments seen above, and you may get an answer: (From elsewhere on the net)

The following line up subject to availability

Home Fleet

Class 08s 08850 & 08556
Class 24 D5061
Class 25 D7628 'Sybilla'
Class 37 37 264
Class 101 101680

Visitors

Class 31 31128 'Charbdylis'
Class 37 37275
Class 47 47798 'Prince William'
Class 55 55022 'Royal Scots Grey'

Thanks to all the owners for the availablity

Friday and Saturday will be Through services Pickering to Whitby Town

Sunday will see a Pickering to Grosmont and Whitby Town to Battersby service
(Due to time table changes next year this may not be possible)

It is hoped to repeat the Pie and Pea service on Friday night and Saturday Teatime services

The reason for charging for loco allocations is obvious to most. These events cost a lot of money to stage, and it has to be recouped somehow. If you try and circumvent the charges, you are only jeapodising future events. Diesel galas are not huge profit turners sadly.

But equally, if people don't know what is working and when, they won't come - railways have to compete for people's custom, and if I have a choice of two lines I can attend one weekend, one of which gives gen for free in advance to let me plan my trip, and one which insists on charging, which will I go to.... Have all the other railways that give the info for free got their policy wrong? (The NYMR is the only one I'm aware of which continually attempts to try and charge for the information.)

It's a difficult one, and I don't envy those who have to try and balance the books. The diesel market is a very hard one to make money out of. The interest tends to be VERY specific, which makes it so much harder to cater for. My personal view, would be to include the gen with a pre - purchased gala day rover. The lineside brigade should have to purchase it separately, and for a lot more than £3!

I realise it is difficult - but my belief is the small number of lineside photographers who will shell out for the diagrams will not cover the cost of the loss those potential travellers who will not turn up because they don't know what is working and when. It doesn't matter too much to the linesider what turns up, as they'll photograph it anyway whatever it is. The basher is more specialist, and in my view the railway needs to cater for the needs of its customer.

If I attend on the Friday, I'll have to take a day off work, so it really has to be worth my while. If the first two trains off Pickering are going to be 31128 and 47798, I won't bother - they don't interest me, and to start my day at 11.00 (or whenever train 3 is) means it isn't worth the day's leave. If I know that something more interesting to me will be on those trains, I'll probably take the day off work. If I don't know either way, I won't bother - I'm not prepared to spend £3 or £5 just to find out that I won't want to attend!

This is why the market is so hard to tap into. Why, in fact, many question if it actually exists. If a loco is advertised, but it has to be used the day before, and ends up out of position, you'll be put out. Yet, seven days a week, the railway is satisfying customers who are not so specific in their requirements, yet who hand over virtually the same amount of cash.

I think most people are aware, and appreciate, that there may be unforseen circumstances (eg loco failures etc) that may result in plans being altered at short notice. And nowadays it's so easy to update people quickly, via websites, twitter feeds etc.

It's something that needs looking at. I've booked off up there st 1930, and the loco arrangements for the next day still haven't been up on the shed board, let alone the public website.

Believe me, I want to see this event work, and if possible, more money be made out of the heritage diesel sector.

To be honest I wouldn't expect a roster quite yet - the list of attendees changed less than 48 hours ago when D335 was withdrawn. In my mind, a loco roster around 7-14 days beforehand would be ideal, but I know some lines even then have to alter it in the days leading up to the event.

One thing that I know some railways don't take into account with diesel events is the increased sales of food, beer, etc at the time - as it simply gets put in the catering department's takings. Then there are extra sales in the shop. It's also worth noting that a fair number of diesel followers may join railways as a member. I took out life membership of the NYMR last year - if it never ran diesels, I doubt I would have bothered! As for the earlier comment that the NYMR doesn't like diesels, I suspect the NYMR is in the top 2 or 3 lines when it comes to the amount of diesel haulage offered per year - how many other preserved railways can say that one particular diesel ran on 27 days in June?

Did they want to run the diesels or was it because the steamers were failing left, right and centre?

The NYMR does have a reputation for running the diesels into the ground and then sidelining them, they always put the diesel maintenance at the bottom of the to do list, a steamer always takes priority for shed/ workshop space.

If it hasnt got steam coming out of it then the railway is not fussed, why else would they let a bridge get in such a state that it had a 5mph limit over it until such time as it could be replaced?
That bridge had not seen a paintbrush since the line was bought, if it had been maintained then it may have lasted a few more years.

Why was 50027 moved away to the MHR again, I seem to have forgotten?

Oh dear, typical narrow minded diesel enthusiast garbage. "I want you to do my pet project, regardless of real world realities"

If the diesels weren't advertised on the timetable, then they shouldn't have been out. They upset the majority of the paying public. Of course steam is the priority, it is what pays the bills. However, you will see a 25 in the workshops right now, and I'm sure one of the 24s will be in there pretty soon after it. Hopefully 5032.

The 50 hadn't turned a wheel in years, and there was no realistic prospect of it doing so. Better for all parties that they moved on. Best wishes for the future, etc. There's not really much need for, or facilities to maintain, private owner diesels up there.

As for the bridge, it had been 15, never 5, for about 20 years, and had been slated for replacement since the line re - opened. The bits that you could see from the top weren't structural, and there is no point in painting something that is going for scrap! You obviously don't know that NR have replaced the bridges of the same type on the EVL just this winter. Do you think we'd have stood any chance of getting the grant funding for the bridge now? Or was getting it done when they did rather sensible?

Yeah whateva!

The blackwatch was making the point that the NYMR had the diesels out for 27 days in June but the only reason being there were no steamers available, he tried to make it sound as if the diesels were out by design which is far from the truth.

It only took a fortnight to get it running down at the MHR, funny that!

As for the bridge, it had been 15, never 5, for about 20 years,
The video that was on the news showed it as 5 but you obviously know better.
Sometimes the truth hurts, touch a nerve did I?;)

On 11 of the days, diesel traction was specifically advertised in the timetable as taking place, on the remainder, it was quoted as "may be diesel worked". The NYMR does promote its use of diesels, hence it putting news stories up on its website such as the recent one at http://www.nymr.co.uk/2012/08/55022-royal-scots-grey/

The point is, the Moors had got no use for it.

Erm, yes. I've been footplate up there for the better part of the last 25 years. I think I know what the permitted speeds are! (Possibly better than some youtube piece).

The Deltic is an excellent example of how diesels can have a positive role to play. No NR passed steam available, so enter into a short term arrangement that benefits both parties. No need to have to store, or provide facilities to maintain it, long term.
Even with the "ultimate" diesel as cover, Whitby takings still down apparently.

I attended the event yesterday and despite the shaky start with locos on the wrong diagrams, the Whitby service having to be suspended (through no fault of the NYMR I hasten to add) and the failure of the 25 on its first run, I enjoyed the day! A word of warning for anyone going today - I understand Whitby trains are 'off' again today (Northern Rail terminating at Glaisdale for a bus forward) due to a gas leak in the Sleights area.

Congratulations to the NYMR for putting an excellent diesel gala. Despite all the problems with a gas leak and a failed loco delays were kept to a minimum. The weather was the best so far this year, so there were many people there. It's a pleasure to see the whole show in full swing and again congrats to the staff for working so hard.

BTW the roast beef on the Pullman was excellent!
