New Wolverton Station Building Blueprints

The old alignment is still a railway - it's the access to the works. There's a road through there too now though and not enough room to re-instate a four-track main line.

I don't think the straight through alignment was ever more than twin track, and the recent building work has compromised the formation. With HS2 in the offing there is probably no reason to go the the expense of reinstating the original 1838 alignment.

This is a list published yesterday on this forum showing that LM have put in a request to reduce opening hrs of a list of stations including Wolverton.

Indeed. A year ago they put in a request and they were given permission by DfT last week. But they don't have to do it, its just that they now have permission. Since they submitted the request a lot has happened, ie a station building has gone up. So even though LM now has permission to reduce hours they are not going to use that permission.

I don't hold my breath in relation to anything to do with Milton Keynes/Wolverton/Bletchley as far as transport goes. I lived there for 24 years.

Driving past Wolverton station earlier today, I noted that the contractors are still very much in possession. I wonder if they will complete the job and leave the site, before Christmas? Has there been any news of "surprises" causing delays during their work?

Or was it always scheduled to take so long?

My understanding was it was already open, but I often pass it on the no. 33 bus to Northampton and observe that the whole car park is a building site. My guess is that it's utilities and finishes - or maybe the money's run out!

The new station building is complete and has been open and in use for two months. However if all you've done is go past in a car or bus that might not be obvious because the front door is not yet in use, access is only from the platform. The contractors have left, the site huts, etc have all gone. What remains to be done is finishing off the car park and pedestrian access.

I've heard different stories about why that is delayed. Something to do with drains found beneath it which has to be sorted before the final surfacing can be done. There may be a problem with funding because the slope down from Stratford Rd had to be piled to stop the road sliding down into the car park when the footpath was widened. That piling was expensive and wasn't in the original plan.

Approx 5 weeks have gone by and it's now October 2nd, and when I drove past Wolverton Station today, whilst the car parks were tidier than earlier, they still appear to need a final surfacing, and of course, remain closed to the public.

There is a dispute between the council and the contractor about the state of some trenches that were dug in the car park. The top surface cannot be laid until the trenches have been properly filled in and capped. Might take another month to sort out.
