Doe anyone know what this is about?

#CardiffEast Main lines to Cardiff reopened, relief lines and line to Barry (Valley) still closed in one direction. @nationalrailenq

Can't think of any embankments in the East Cardiff area, apart from that which carries the Valley lines down over the mainline and into Cardiff Central station (One the Queen Street side). Apparently 1V92 Struck with debris.

A photo was posted by Arriva that shows the extent of the "slip". It is indeed the line from Cardiff Central to Queen Street, the embankment next to the main line.

Looks pretty bad.

This could cause some MAJOR problems later on today - as the Bronze medal match for the mens Football is taking place in Cardiff, especially with the revised service on FGW and the amended Valley lines.

Network Rail (from the BBC article here) are saying it'll be 10-14 days to repair it. Valley Lines are the worst affected, with nothing going between CDF and CDQ, diverting via the City Line for most services.

Hope it doesnt happen again once they have repaired it especially when they install the overhead wires in around 4-5 years time.

Not been a good week so far for the Valley Lines with that class 150 failing at Barry Island as well.

I regularly travel from Cadoxton to Merthyr due to work.

It is difficult indeed, but they have been pathetic in management!

Diverting via the city line is great, it proves a lot of closures in the past now look silly. However, as they are only going to Central, why in hell are they stopping at all city lines. The delays are pathetic because of this!!!!!!
I took a bus from Ty Verlon to Cardiff as I could not rely on the train! It cost me money but the bus was there!!!

If they run diversionary routes as they have to, DO NOT STOP on the stations in between and it will stop incessant delays SIMPLE!!!!!

Are they bonkers not to see this?????

This is going to be trouble getting home and the morning peak

It has been absolute hell with delays and cancellations!! I had to pay to take a bus instead!!!! It is ridiculous that they are diverting yet still serving stations that are not part of the route!!!

It defies belief and really questions need to be asked! The extra stops are the WHOLE reason for delays!!!

I expect slight delays but doing what they are doing is histrionic and totally wrong!

Are any of the diverted service replacing normal services on that line? Ie are the normal city line services still running?

Services to Caerphilly, Rhymney and Coryton:
Passengers must embark at QUEEN STREET STATION for these services. This is a last minute change to the previously publicised event arrangements.

All other Valleys Services:
Passengers must embark at CARDIFF CENTRAL STATION using the rear (South) entrance as is normal for major sporting event.

Services to London, Bristol, Manchester, North Wales, Birmingham and Gloucester:
Passengers must embark at CARDIFF CENTRAL STATION using the front (North) entrance to the station as is normal for major sporting event.

West bound Services to Swansea and West Wales:
Passengers must embark at CARDIFF CENTRAL STATION using the East entrance to the station as is normal for major sporting even

From the information I have, valley's services which would normally travel between Central and Queen street are terminating and starting from Queen Street. All services which travel from Queen Street to Cardiff Central and beyond are starting from Central. All other services seem to be running as planned.

From recent twitter annoucement's things have been running smoothly. Anyone out on the ground able to confirm?

You do blow your trumpet sometimes or are you just trying to get something out of your system. The Merthyr trains are taking up the City Line stops to replace the normal service. There are 4 trains in each direction diverted via the City Line and a single line stretch through Ninian Park making pathing more difficult.
I am not blaming Arriva management for being pathetic. There is a serious problem on the line and they are doing their best under very difficult circumstances. There is a large number of of trains to accomodate in Cardiff Central which are required to reverse and this can only be done on Platform 7 or Platform 4 where paths are restricted to slots between Main Line services. It is not signalled to leave Platform 6 with a loaded passenger train although ECS moves can be made.
In the case of disruption, traincrews are thrown out of place so please stop knocking everybody who is trying to do their best and blame the unfortunate incident and not put it onto on anything or anybody else. There are also passengers travelling between points other Cadoxton and Merthyr.

All Merthyr trains seem to be going to Bridgend and no alternating with Barry Island.

Return trains are alternating from Bridgend and Barry Island.

Diagrams all changed it seems for I guess improving reliability, but already train cancellations are reported.

It is going to be two weeks of hell I imagine!

Loaded passenger trains are departing westbound from platform 6. Take the opportunity now to do it.... it is a rare move. Yesterday, Friday 10th August, I did the move on the 1210 (departed 1233) to Grangetown (1052 Aberdare to Barry Island).

I may be going a touch overboard as it is personally affecting me.

However, I understand it is difficult and expect delays but is it sensible to stop everywhere due to the problem at Queen Street? I think it would make more sense NOT to stop on the City Line at least every other anyway.

It is just that I can foresee the fact that my trains home from work are going to be seriously late or cancelled.

I leave for work on the 6:38am train and Monday to Thursday return on the 5:37pm train.

It is a very long day out of the house around 13 hours. Maybe I am selfish but I get little free time as it is.

My anger should not be diverted at Arriva but more to a little more sensible management that is all!

In a non-selfish mood (yes I was being selfish but purely anger driven without thinking - apologies all!), isn't platform 0 available or can it not be used for reversing facilities? I bow down to superior knowledge.

Also, maybe in off peak times should they revert to an hourly service rather than half hourly?

It also must be a heck of a job to rebuild that wall!

Hi Mark,
There is no facility to work off P0 Westbound, not with passengers anyway. Its only got a GPL for shunt moves, and you cant start a passenger service of a GPL. So the only option is Eastbound, of the main aspect signal.

Every other service wss the original plan for the City Line diversions, so I expect they changed thier minds for a good reason. (Altruism is easy when ou're not directly affected, I know.) Perhaps rthey found that pathing through the single track portion at Canton, or through the poins at Central or Radyr, meant that you'd be stood still somewhere regardless, so the trains may as well call at the stations? I also seem to recall that at least one station (Danescourt?) has a ~20mph speed restriction on through services because of platform clearance, so a fast train may well feel slow.

Good point, as I did notice a slowdown on the way to work yesterday. I do not know if there was a 20mph limit in place but you may well be right!

The Valleys lines though, in a future when it can be afforded needs straightening. WAY too many curves, but that is only a dream :)

But the trains stop at all city line stations so that city line passengers aren't losing out due to a problem that doesn't even affect them! :)

Yes but I spotted 1 passenger on one, two on another and none on the others! What was most bonkers though was the displays had NOTHING except phone for latest etc apart from Ninian Park which had next train due at 11:38am and it was about 7:35am! Quality :)

The issue here is that the City Line normally has a 2tph service, but with all the diverted services stopping it now has a 4tph service. They're actually benefiting from the disruption (assuming they're not going past Central)!

But won't it be 4tph due to the fact that the services will be busier?

No, still only 2 trains in each direction with the Merthyrs calling but not the Aberdares.

Thats right. The display screens were put down because in the case of severe disruption they only spout out a load of rubbish. Unfortunately there is no facility to give general info by text.

There is no 20 mph restriction for normal valleys stock, I've driven through at line speed (55) several times. I think 158's may have had a restriction when they used to work the valleys but that was before my time.

IIRC it for 158s through Ninian Park and fairwater. Dont have an SA to hand at the moment. Used to run at linespeed along there with the 1Fxx Treherberts

I just came into Central on the mainline a few minutes ago, and we were kindly held outside waiting for platform clearance right next to the affected area. Most of the rubble appears to have been bagged up, with a road-rail crane on the down line from Queen St lifting filled "gravel sacks" up out of the way. Work has started on building a new retaining wall (in brick).

I was reading the South Wales Echo yesterdayand many Twitter messages from people were quoted saying that ATW were useless, were a shabbles, the staff were awful, the trains were full, information was diabolical and other derogatory comments. None of them however blamed the actual incident.
