Hi there,

I have recently applied for a conductor @ Selhurts for Southern ( y'day ) and got a email today asking me to attend an assessment day.

As you have already had your assessment day or (AD for short) how was it?

What tests did you go through?

Any help would b appreciated.

Is it me, or is it showing up with No Jobs Found on the main vacancy page ? The link works fine though.

Anyone know any further information about guards at Southern - what routes do they sign? do they have full control of all door operation?

As far as I'm aware, Southern Guards do not release their doors - the Driver does that - but they do, currently, have control of door closing and train dispatch, obviously with the exception of the DOO routes. Their routes would depend on their depot, I've no idea what Redhill boys would sign.

As for the earlier quote about thoughts in general, it's an enjoyable job that pays a decent wage, so long as you're happy to work with people - including the occasional idiot - and don't mind shift work. The stated 27k salary sounds like it doesn't include sundays, in which case you can expect a bit more on top if you work them (30k ish).

The Redhill lot go to:
Reigate, Tonbridge, upto London Bridge/London Victoria, Horsham (via Crawley), the Brighton main line, the Arun Valley, West Coastway, Bognor and Littlehampton.
They only sign 377 stock.

Conductors have full control of the doors on Class 171 DMUs, plus 455s and 456s if they are conductor operated.

That's good to know ;)

I didn't realise that any of Southern's 455/6 stock had Guards, that's also good to know!

MOST 455/456 operation is DOO, but they carry guards between Dorking and Horsham, Epsom and Guildford, and on the peak hour West London Line services from Clapham Junction to Shepherds Bush etc.

Are they a ToC that still receive commission?

5% on the first £2000 of takings and 8% on anything above that in a 4 week pay period.

Plus area allowance. Sundays and Bank Hols are outside the working week and paid at time and half IIRC.

Redhill Drivers work at least 1 or 2 daily services (first/last trains?) to/from Reading on behalf of FGW. I would imagine these are crewed with a Redhill conductors too.

Thats quite interesting, do they use FGW stock for these services or do they use Southern's 171s? :)

Thanks

Redhill Link 1 drivers sign the North Downs route all the way to Reading, and the 165/166 Turbos. FGW has its own conductor depot at Redhill, but it doesn't have any drivers based there, hence the need to sub-contract.
