To be able to add a Railcard (or any other discount) entitlement to an Oyster, the card MUST be registered. The system won't let you put it on without doing so.

It's left as an exercise for the reader as to whether staff are doing so correctly, however!

Cheers,

Barry

This can be overridden by typing anything into the Photocard field I believe.

Indeed. Although some staff insist on the card being registered, you can put railcards on unregistered Oystercards. As island says, you put something in the photocard field and it over-rides the restriction.

As far as TfL are concerned, that counts as registered...which could cause problems if you subsequently lose it and call the Helpdesk for a replacement!

Reason being that stations can't (or at least couldn't last October when I lost mine) issue a replacement for an Oyster with a discount registered on it.

That makes sense.

That's interesting. I wonder why not.

In fact, looking at the TfL website, it appears that ANY replacement now needs to be arranged through the Helpdesk (for which you need your card number and password) or Online. You can either have it sent out by post (if there are at least six days remaining if you've got a Season loaded) or get a new card and nominate a station to pick up the transfer from as if you were doing a top up online.

That'll be quite a nuisance for visitors.

I believe it is because railcard discounts are only recent (last 2 yrs or so) and the system cannot cope with issueing replacement

I think it is also to check that you are still entitled to that discount.

I think these were the excuses given by TFL when I lost mine last year.
