Beats me where all the investment is coming from in vehicles for all these services, either cash rich or lots of credit!!!!!

The latter!
I've not seen anything documented since summer 2010, before Cityhopper started, but back then I think it was something like £3million outstanding on finance agreements. 24 buses on the Cityhopper fleet now I think (quick add up in my head), and have taken the 2 Vario's, and now these deckers, so that'll be a fair bit added, as well as the new coaches they've taken since then.
They've also got some part in Harris Travel (rebrand of Rossendale Travel).

In britain we have like 3/4 big service operators Stagecoach, Arriva, First group and Go ahead, anyone reckon Reays could be the new one of these big companys say 10/15 years from now? Just a thought anyway

Most likely the B7TL ALX400's they've acquired, now that they have sent their Oly's away for OT conversions for the 55 Lakes Hopper.
R could be for.....Reays :D

I would not read too much into these ALX400s. Chris Reay often talks rubbish. They have yet to appear anywhere. While I would like to see him get them they dont seem to be forthcoming yet.

He now has 4 Dublin Olympians however.

When taking on a beast like Stagecoach a small operator has to put their neck out and take risks. If Reays is borrowing a lot of money that is their risk. If it pays off they will grow and challenge SC. if not they will crash and burn. Any company wanting to rapidly expand has to take on debt, that's normal but it must be manageable and that will be the real test.

In the past SC have entered into many bus wars. They have thrown millions at depots in the form of new vehicles, they have slashed fairs and increased frequency. If SC wanted to do this with CE and LL they could, quite easily, but it all depends on whether SC thinks they are worth fighting for and how much profit that stand to lose. If they are going to invest it has to result in a healthy return.

Yes. The X61 couldn't make money with coaches, it made even less when it moved to Chorley and went to DDs on a slightly reduced frequency.

The X25 was the last chance to save the route with a much reduced frequency, operating only at peak times. Sadly it hasn't worked.

I think Stagecoach have missed a trick with the X61/X25. Running it with old high floor coaches/buses can't be a good thing. Perhaps running more modern low floor vehicles would help along with better advertising and fares which are valid before a certain time. An adult day return is issued as a Lancs Day Rider which is only valid after 09:00 Mon-Fri, so only useful on two of the three buses off Preston that run on those days (even one of those two is only a half working to Chorley).

I also think that running the service as a proper limited stop express would be useful. The service is up against the railway and the much quicker TPE services that run along the same corridor.

On another note.
Preston look to have tweaked the displays on buses with the older 'flip dot' displays. Buses now show only the final destination with no via points. Buses with newer LED displays continue to show via points.

i was thinking that the trains are nearly every 10-20 mins between preston/chorley and manchester as the bus was every hour.
Its even quicker on the lancaster/preston-blackpool train(if you get the right ones),
xx:26 lancaster-preston,
xx:55 preston-blackpool(non-stopper)
gets you there in less than an hour compared to the 42 that takes hour and half to get there.

Thing about the 42 and other long services is that they pass through a lot of other places on the way to their final destination. So for example not many people would get the bus direct to Preston from Lancaster as the train is faster and roughly the same price. But people will get it to Greaves, Galgate, Garstang and other little villages along the way.

I'm not sure whether the X25 etc passed through many places on the way that were not served by other regular services. If they were relying souly on customers doing the whole trip from start to finsh I can see why it fell on it's backside. It was good of SC to give it a final go with the X25 to be honest.

From Preston to Horwich the X25 shadows the 125 for most of its journey. The X25 also serves all stops between Horwich and the M61 which slows the journey down (hardly an express). I don't think there's much of the X25 route that isn't served by other better quality bus route.

I think if the route was proper limited stop with stops at Preston Bus Station, Clayton Brook, Chorley Interchange and Horwich then it may just become a viable option for people to get to and from Manchester. Yes the train is quicker and more frequent but it dose get overcrowded, especially between Manchester and Bolton.

The removal of Service X25 was part of an overall review of ALL Services in South Lancs and there will be more suprises in the coming months as many contracts are terminated and not renewed most due to local authority funding cuts and the current economic climate, times are drastically changing and all bus services will reflect that without doubt, only time will tell what changes are neccessary at ALL Depot's.

I've been waiting for this to take effect really. Both cuts from central and local gov are starting to bite. Lancashire County Council seem to be cuting left right and centre in terms of transport in an attempt to save money.

It will be interesting to see how depots up here are effected. I can't remember off the top of my head how much subsidised work Morecambe does, I think most of it is evening services I.e. 81a/81b etc but clarification would be good. If you look at Barrow you can see just how much Cumbria County Council are getting rid of.

ALX400, how are schools going to be effected at Chorley? I've been wondering for a while what the plan is in terms of replacing the Olys on school runs as they are getting to old?

Think most of the subsidised services went to travellers, kirkby lonsdale(42) and battersbys around the morecambe/lancaster area.

A slightly strange observation I've found...
I've just been looking up some bus times on the council's website and I've noticed that the 108/508 is advertised as being low floor which seems strange as every week day on the 108 the Penrith depot simply uses a 'step entrance' olympian and weekend services tend to use B10s, although Penrith have used 34715 and 18357 which are both low floor but I don't think they've made any special effort for use something low floor, just my observation.

PVR for the 108 is 2 deckers, Carlisle/Penrith have 2 low floor deckers allocated.
Given that 17017 is yet again off the road for an extended period, you can see the problem.

Council website also has 93 as low floor, but it is B10M during daytimes.

2 low floor deckers are 104, not 108.
1 Oly on 108 mon-fri, due to schools, should be B10M at weekends on 508. Oly off 108 does Penrith market bus with one of the deckers off 104.
Lack of 17017, and an Oly off for scheduled service, meant 20959 was Wigton market bus yesterday instead of an Oly.

has 20959 been mistaken for a decker as it was also covering for 17017 on the 104 last week weirdly!

Also the Penrith market bus usually used a 104 trident these days, as carlisle runs one of the 104 slots on a saturday

its a weird case on the 93 as the morning journey into carlisle is not listed as low floor suggesting a B10 where as the afternoon journeys are LF except they arnt always..

You just worry that sooner rather than later this could become embarrasing for Stagecoach

if a wheelchair user read the timetable thinking all these services were low floor when actually they wernt

Solo 47009 was Kendal's allocation on the 508 today, must have been a nasty route for a 51 reg Solo but at least it was 'low floor' :)

As for the 93, there are certain journey(s) that are low floor under contract to CC. It is a CC error and not a Stagecoach errror for what is advertised as low floor and the same goes for the 508. No journeys on the 508 are down to be low floor apart from the Kendal journeys on a Sunday.

34685 out on the 179 today while 20944 was duping due to a rta in Longtown.
20977 out on full 685s and 16666 on 300 duties.
