Were they terminating at Retford and heading back to Sheffield/Adwick?

Didn't travel that far, but that was what the Guard announced, something like passengers for Lincoln and Gainsborough please take the EMT service on Platform whatever it was, we will be terminating at Retford with a Rail Replacement Bus service onwards.

Not sure how the diagrams work out, things were also re-timed through Sheffield so I don't really know if they sat there awaiting picking up the return working or whether they worked back straight away.

That makes sense as the landslide was between Gainsborough and Retford, and the line that EMT use from Doncaster to Gainborough Lea Road joins the track shortly before GBL, so won't be affected by it.

The question is, why a replacement bus service between Retford and Lincoln, and not just between Retford and Gainsborough, with passengers getting onto a Northern or EMT service to Lincoln from there? Would it not have been possible for them to run a service from Lincoln to Gainsborough, terminate, and then run back to Lincoln?

Also, what happened to the Saturday only service to Cleethorpes?

Because that would involve having 1 northern unit trapped in lincoln. And i dont think northern have a crew point at lincoln as its only 1tph.

They don't, only EMT have a crew base at Lincoln.

A few years ago when the embankment collapsed somewhere beyond Worksop, they did run a Worksop to Lincoln shuttle (two hourly) - but that was due to the longer term repairs required.

I forgot about that, although I think they have a drivers depot at Doncaster. Would they be allowed to send a train ECS to Gainsborough and then run a shuttle to/from Lincoln, or would this cause too many problems?

Doubt any Northern drivers sign Doncaster - Gainsborough direct, and you'd have to taxi traincrew across at various points during the day (need to think about PNBs as well as maximum turn length). It'd be a push to do Lincoln - Gainsboro' Trent Jns and back in an hour too with just one unit, and it'd be unlikely to fit in with the buses to and from Retford in any case.

EMT service is rather infrequent.
