Metrolink is light rail and as far as I know isn't subject to assessments required for heavy rail although there is a test involved.

Take note chaps: the person spec has changed a bit (in the wording at least) so you can't just bang in your old application!

When answering the part about essential skills / experiences is anyone else providing answers to the qualities part as well or is that not necessary.
Seems a very high person spec if you need to provide evidence of all the qualities section as well.

Also, this may seema daft question, but do you need to have a car licence to apply for thi? I've been riding a motorbike for 11yrs but never passed a car test. does that rule me out? I would say I'm more road savvy and hazard aware than a car driver with being more exposed to road risk on a bike.

You can always say that, I mean, it's probably a possibility they didn't think for, so just say that - there's nothing to lose!

When I applied in the last round I made sure I covered skills, experience and qualities. It is a lot to try and cram in so you'll have to group them up a bit to fit it in the word count!

I'm 99% sure that you need a Cat B (car) driving licence to operate a tram on the street (in fact I'm pretty sure that's part of the Road Traffic Act). Though I agree it is a little ambigous from the wording of the job description so it could be worth calling them to confirm.

Could you need car licence because the lines are in the road so you are driving on the road

Just called their HR who confirmed that you need a Cat B licence to drive a tram so that's me out of the running.

Just checked the older version against the new version of the job description, and both clearly state that:

"Must be in Possession of a full current driving licence which is valid to drive in the UK, with no more than 3 penalty points" It goes on to say "Must have 2 years regular driving experience since passing the driving test. Further driving experience would be an advantage."

Worth a phone call to the HR team; whom are very nice when it comes to getting clarification on things etc. their number is 0161 205 8665. But i think i looks quite clear that you must have a driving licence. Worth a phone call at least?

Again, thanks to everyone for the info. Really helpful forum this

I do have a licence but it's a full motorcycle licence (Cat A). Have never felt the need to drive a car, bikes so much more fun (speed freak!). Seems to have cost me this opportunity however.
Their HR were quite implicit yesterday that it needs to have Cat B entitlement.

Maybe that's something to sort out so I can try again in the future.

Nah, keep trying mate. Gotta keep pestering them.

Reassuring though that Metrolink HR are doing their best to at least look at all the applications they received, unlike our nearby local train company, who just picked a few and slung the rest.

I know there were a considerable number of applicants this time round - up on the last round - so it's possible they might be trying fresh candidates first. Afterall, I wouldn't have thought those assessment days are too cheap to run!!

Like 185 says though, they do at least go through all the applications! And there will be plenty more opportunities to come, so don't lose hope

Unlike the railway, no 6 month rubbish at Metrolink, just reapply.

As long as you've a Cat B Car License, and are good at following clear instructions, you'll do well. I met some of the current reprobates on the latest drivers course yesterday, good to see theres a broad spectrum of decent people they've took on.

There's that many applicatants that it could easily be 4 or 5 weeks before you hear back, especially if you are successful as you'll need to be allocated to an assessment day. Just keep being patient, even if it does feel like a loooong time
