Does anyone understand the Zurich public transport system fare zones and in particular is a local network ticket valid in 121 and if so why cannot I use it to travel in both 121 and use the long museum night ticket for 110?
They seem to be saying that I cannot transfer between zones which is like the case posted here

I am an English person coming to Zurich for the long night of museums in September
I have seen that the long night ticket gives unlimited travel in Zone 110 on Saturday 5th September
We are staying at an airport Hotel
I have seen that I can buy a local network 24 hour ticket for CHF 5.60
Does this mean unlimited travel for 24 hours in Zone 121 if I buy this ticket and activate in Zone 121?

Thank you very much for your message.
With a ticket for the Long Night of Museums, you have cover for the whole of Zone 110 (City of Zurich). A local network ticket is not sufficient to travel from Zone 121 to Zone 110, as it is only valid for a single local authority area. Please purchase a 24-hour connecting ticket for 1–2 zones. Price: CHF 9.40.

As far as I can see, you can combine both these tickets for zones 110 and 121, since these zones connect with each other. See articles 3.5.1 and 3.5.2 of ZVV's general conditions.

I think the issue may be that the “Lokalnetz” is not necessarily the whole of a tariff zone (otherwise it would be just described as a 1 Zone ticket). I suspect that it refers to a ticket for a smallish urban area within a single zone - so a) may not be available everywhere and b) won’t necessarily take you to the boundary of the actual Zurich tariff zone. If that is the case, you would normally need a 3 zone ticket for 121 and central Zurich (as the latter counts as 2 zones).

Lokalnetz tickets are as I suspected only valid for a “municipality” rather than a whole zone. As far as I can see, Zurich Airport is in the municipality of Kloten, which does not reach to the border of the Zurich city zones, so the “Lokalnetz” ticket and the museum night ticket would not be enough.

This makes perfect sense now and thanks for taking the trouble to untangle my confusion

However our hotel is actually in Rumlang which does border 110 so we would be OK although I will have to investigate if it is practical to get back after midnight sticking to Rumlang and 110 only

It doesn't border 110 unless you want to use the 742 bus. Here is the list with the stations in a Lokalnetz.
