One problem is that some people don't seem to know that there's no need to bellow down a phone. We had a colleague once who shouted into his office phone. We often said to him that he didn't actually need his phone because the person at the other end could probably hear him without it.

My wife is like that!
She thinks that because the person she is talking to on the phone is quiet at her end, she must be equally quiet at their end... Nobody can ever persuade her otherwise!!! I'm cloth eared, but I can always tell from anywhere in the house when she's on her phone...
