York to Selby

In 1978 was the York to Selby route classed as part of the ECML and did express trains travel down there.

The ECML was via Selby and the now closed route (which is partly the A19 and partly a cycle path) through Riccall and Bishopthorpe until the early/mid 1980s, when the 125mph "Selby diversion" was created.

IIRC, it was 1983 and the deviation was necessary because of the Selby coalfield.

It was October 1983 if my memory is right. I was on the first passenger train to travel over the new line in its entirity, and (somewhere!) have a certificate to prove it!
