I think the best thing to do is just look at what France/Germany are doing and do that, it works for them.

Which is not erect ticket barriers at main line stations, and instead have regular ticket checks on long-distance services!

Er, no, I don't think so.

Sorry Dave but yes they were on and working. Everyone had to put their tickets through the barrier, there were staff helping people through with non-barrier tickets and my friend had to do the same about an hour later. THis was Monday at approximately 15.20.
