It would be interesting to see WSMR's full submission to get the details, because like you say, it seems 'odd'. But the interesting part is this the from the article you posted: "Part of the bid plans to utilise train path rights previously operated temporarily by Avanti West Coast services which ran from Chester and Holyhead to London Euston. These rights are due to end this month."

If there is soon to be vacated 'space' and WSMR are targeting this, then all of sudden things start looking a little less odd.
I thought they would have used the old WSMR route or gone via Market Harborough on the Midland Mainline to Kings X, but perhaps the timing of these Avanti vacant temporary paths is perfect for WSMR...

Yes i had thought they were going to be settling for a plan b, more round the houses. But yes, it seems they seem to have pounced on this opportunity. I still remain somewhat hesitant that orr Will approve.

What happens to the Avanti services from Chester? Are they taking the spots of the services that just got cut?

If so, perhaps they will be able to start some of the services at Chester (especially in the evenings and early hours).

Yes it would make sense, extra revenue and all that. I think I heard that they wanted to originally stable(some stock) at Chester too.

I don't see how this solves the capacity concern Network Rail has.

I think their plan is to basically replace Avanti’s dead Chester service south of Rugby so it all slots in.

Avanti’s last Chester to Euston is at 17:32 now which makes an evening trip from Wrexham into a 2 stop.

I can imagine this becoming a Shrewsbury to Maryleborne at some point though considering both the WCML issues and the Wrexham to Crewe planned hourly service.

Regarding congestion on the WCML, how much would full ETCS implementation have on that?

Dont knock it. That's an extra four trains per hour twenty four instead of twenty.
In theory anyway.
Except it doesnt always mean you can fit more trains in the timetable. Theoretical capacity is nowhere near the same as usable so its a nonsense metric in reality. ETCS is at least 20 years from the WCML southern end.

Any reason why the slow lines can't be used south of Milton Keynes? I get it will add 10-15 to the journey, but at least it might make it possible to operate?

Given the fact we are trundling through Walsall on the way speed and journey time seems to be conceding to convenience, so why not find a less attractive path rather than applying for the fast lines when NR will just keep blackballing?
