Just messing about on NRE's website, I typed in a First Class Return for the above journey, going on Mon 1st Nov from 0700, and coming back on the Wednesday from 1200. NRE's first option gave me a price of about £150.00. The second was the WSMR for £55.00 (Christ they are good!), and the third was via Chester to Euston, for about the same as WSMR, though this was the only via Chester train with this pricetag (this was on the way down only). Why are the fares all so different?

Do you mean AP tickets and the prices above are for one way only? I was on London Midland site and the £55 fare appears to be 1st Class AP's. The cheapest AP singles seem to be £35 on the 1127 WS journey.

Just checked Avantix. Can't seem to find those fares as returns either. VT's cheapest Advance in 1st Class seems to be £34 and WS £35. All w/o Railcard discount

Jump on board the WSMR service and buy on board if not buying advance

Avoid the VT service at all costs, boycott it even, we dont want to lose a great company like WSMR, the VT avd may be the same but the service will be 2 opposites
