Two questions
1. QUOTE 1A36 14:20 KX - York (carries 1N72 Hull portion). UNQUOTE
What exactly does this mean? Is it the same concept as one of today's split trains?

2. QUOTE 1A62 21:20 Holloway - Perth (cars - via Lincoln). UNQUOTE
Why Holloway and not King's Cross? Does the reference to Lincoln mean the service actually went that way? Seems odd for a London-Scotland service.

At the time you couldn't load cars at King's Cross so Holloway was used. It ran via Lincoln to facilitate track tools in the ECML proper.

My opinion
1. ..Yes train is split.
2. Train started from Holloway (Caledonian Road ) sidings because there was an easy access point for the public to drive cars on to the train. This was the early days of Motorail so facilities were sparse.
There was nowhere at Kings Cross and the public cannot be expected to drive their cars through the middle of the station.
