Planning a day trip to rove about the Isle of Wight at some point. A couple of questions:

Connection times:
- Many planners offer the eight minute connection at Portsmouth Harbour (eg xx08 train arrival to xx15 Ferry departure). Is this a realistic connection if I already have my ticket, or should I build in more time? If not sensible, is the xx02 arrival in other hours a better option?
- Same question for the other side and boarding the Island Line at Pier Head. Is arriving by Wightlink at xx37 and departing by train at xx47 a safe connection?

Tickets:
- My plan is to arrive on the island via Portsmouth-Ryde and depart via Yarmouth-Lymington on the same day. Is there anything more savvy I can do than 2 singles? On the Wightlink website I notice the return ticket talks about a return trip to the Isle of Wight, but may just be simplified language for tourists…
- In the case of missed Train-Ferry or Bus-Ferry connections, are my ferry tickets tied to a service or are they valid all day/over multiple services?

It's very difficult to say without knowing where you're travelling from.

The short connection is possible but is likely to be stressful, I'd go one train earlier.

Officially there is a check in time which I recall makes the 8 minutes not possible but it's not enforced, you just show your train ticket as you board.

Connections to the island at Portsmouth all depend on the incoming train: it is as simple as that. If you are in the front of the train and move fast you can be down in the ferry waiting area in a minute or so, but if the train is late you just have to wait an hour. At the Ryde end there should be no trouble about getting the xx.47 train, but that is only every other hour.

Tickets are not tied to any specific ferry time, with the possible exception of during the Isle of Wight Festival, which is not the best time to visit anyway. Do make sure if buying a through rail ticket to chose Wightlink via Pier Head as you might otherwise end up with one routed via the hovercraft.

It might need to be two singles because every time I've travelled the tickets have been routed to the specific destination, eg Yarmouth IoW... but I've never tried a PlusBus or Island Rover or whatever it's called - so I don't know if any of those would indeed permit arrival via one ferry and departure via the other. It's definitely worth checking, because as you've probably noticed two singles total a rather unpaleteable sum compared to a return.

Would recommend the Yarmouth journey.
The western side is a lot nicer than the east. Rural and hilly like the Chilterns/South Downs

Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin are seaside resorts which like most of others in UK feel a bit down at heel and rundown. Although I'd say they're better than Brighton and Bournemouth in that regard. Just don't go expecting St Ives or Lyme Regis

Cowes is pretty nice and heard good things about Ventnor

Bus tickets are £3 per leg, but there are through fares at £5.50 (or thereabouts). You can get day rovers, but they probably won’t be worth it for a quick visit unless you want to try one of the open top routes.
