Hi all,

I'll be taking a train from Cherbourg to Paris soon, and I just want to know what the situation on WiFi is on Intercités trains (the LHCS services). Have they been fitted with WiFi equipment?

Non - France is a little behind in that aspect, with WiFi only just starting to appear at many stations.

Most Corail stock is still without plug sockets - particularly TER sector stock, but also some Intercités stock, such as those found on the Paris - Belfort line.

However, I do think some of the refurbished Corail stock, such as those refurbished for the Caen / Cherbourg / Le Havre Normandie services do have plug sockets - if they are in the Normandie 'Star' livery with a purple interior, then they do have plug sockets. I believe this stock is put on the longer runs (Caen + Cherbourg) where possible, although I have used some on Le Havre services too.

So no WiFi? A shame, certainly; but as long as there's a charger, I'll be fine! Just need to remember to take an adapter...
Would be pointless fitting it to Corail now anyway, as the whole fleet is due for renewal in the next few years.

Nope, no WiFi. Interestingly enough they do have them aboard their low-cost inter-city iDBUS coaches, and as a result much has been discussed about when (if) we'll see it on the trains, but for the moment, nothing.

As I said, those which are in the purple and green Intercités Normandie livery, with a purple interior DO have plug sockets, although some rakes contain unrefurbished coaches in a much plainer livery.

Whilst some Corail services are going over to unit operation for sure in the next few years, there are still some routes where the future is undecided, hence the investment in some cases like in Normandie.

(And to be honest, there's a lot more candidates for replacement - some of the local DMUs in regional areas are rather long in the tooth now and the Corail stock is still a comfortable ride!)

Par contre as the French say (= conversely) refurbished TER Rhone Alpes corail do have sockets.

There is an interesting break down of what corail stock is what (and where) here:
http://www.trains-europe.fr/sncf/voitures/corail_intercites.htm

I looked on SNCF's question and answer site and one SNCF response quotes that cost is the problem, estimated at 350000 Euros per TGV set, and there are 450 TGV sets...

does that €350,000 include a contribution towards the line side equipment required for a reliable connection between train and internet? Or is it just the rolling stock cost? Line side equipment would of course be required for far more than just the LGVs, but the equipment on the classic lines would be shared with Corail/TER/etc
