If I want to travel London to Nottingham (with no preference for operator), out on a Saturday, back on a Sunday, where's the best place to split tickets to get the best fare?
Does it vary depending on the route and the date?

:( It might not necessarily be possible to get a cheaper fare by splitting, unless you are travelling there and back on the same day.

Should certainly be possible to travel direct to Nottingham from St.Pancras, or via Grantham from Kings Cross.

Target for anyone who reckons that something cheaper is possible will be a combination of tickets costing less than a through Super Off Peak Return (= £50.30).

As far as I can work out from following threads on here, splittings is most likely to yield cheaper tickets where the journey is
A -- > (B) --> C

where B is a boundary between two "local" operators
and
TOC X sets fares from A to B
TOC Y sets fares from B to C
TOX Z sets fares from A to C, and runs a through train service stopping at B.

Not a hard and fast rule, I appreciate, but that's my impression of the general situation. In this case, There isn't really an approrpriate "B" here- there's no TOC Y serving Bedford-Nottingham
