When a bus driver breaking the rules works to your advantage

What would you say is the best thing a bus driver has ever done to break the rules, but it works to your advantage?

For me, it's a bus driver (a different one to that one who says he'd ram cars out the way, forcibly remove passengers etc), who lets me off on a kerbside between bus stops so that I don't have as far away to walk home, as the bus stops are very far apart and getting off at either would mean a long walk the rest of the way home.

Drivers on my local service regularly drop passengers with mobility problems as close to their homes as they can regardless of where the stops are. The drivers have also been known to stop if they see a regular passenger in the street just in case they wanted the service. The actual buses are cr*p but the drivers are superb.

Once when I had a long wait at a cold stop a driver who recognised me told me to sit in his bus while he did a loop through a housing estate as he would be back before my bus was due and it would be a lot warmer.

Back in the early 2000s, Blue Bus of Bolton ran seaside return services from the area - the X1 and X11, picking up from various stops in the area before running to Blackpool and Fleetwood.

My Dad and I were last on the bus on the way back, and delivered us straight to practically our door (way, way off the registered route!) before heading dead to the depot in Horwich.

That (well, something similar) isn't unusual practice on relatively infrequent town routes if you're at the stop and the driver sees you when he is going the other way. Had that a few times in MK.

My late father owned a garage / petrol station, a bus between our house and Mansfield used to go past the garage, around a housing estate and come back past the other way 7 or 8 minutes later. I'd frequently get the drivers to drop me off outside and pick me up again on the way back past (completely between stops) so i could call in and say hello. On the flip side, there was always a hose pipe available for topping up the coolant (clearly not with coolant) on a couple of VRs they had that seemed to leak and never get fixed.
