WSMR did various wacky diversions - West Coast to Birmingham area, but also West Mids to Wrexham via Stafford, Crewe and Chester.

I've seen XC diverted through Barnsley when there's problems around Wakefield Westgate. A relatively sane diversion by some standards, but still fun to see bemused commuters
