What is this?

I noticed this a while ago at Edinburgh Waverley next to one of the ticket machines. Decided to take a photo today. It was installed fairly recently.

What on earth is it?

The 'Not In Service' sticker is a new addition in the last few days...

I'm sure that equipment is a reader for the trial smartcards on the Edinburgh-Glasgow route.

To me it looks like the thing you get in the airport's what you walk through,to check for knive's,and anything metal,Etc...

Like a metal detector, but it's called somthing else,i know its name but forgot it at the moment!

And maybe the "Not In Service" sign means it's not working at the moment.

It is the smartcard reader for the trial. This one is for use on the none barriered platforms AIUI.

It is beuing trialled on the E-G route. It is ITSO compliant (unlike Oyster), and should be interwrkable eventually with the SWt / FCC schemes.
