What is loadshed?

When a train has been off power for too long, it goes into loadshed. What is this?

And why can't a train carry on as normal if in loadshed but has regained traction power.

Loadshedding is the battery preservation which shuts down various electrical systems on the train in a set sequence based on the power draw and importance of that system to preserve battery life. Eventually the batteries will go flat and the train will completely shut down. The trains I drive will in theory last around 3hrs in load shed but when power is restored assuming they haven't gone flat it can continue as the batteries will begin to be recharged. If a train can't continue once power is restored it could be that there isn't enough power in the batteries for the control circuits and equipment.
