Such as, for example, the 1000 morning service from Sticksville to Anytown departing at 0958 instead and then running a couple of minutes early along its entire journey? Would that be 'variation'?

Yes at its lowest level. Essentially there are 3 options on a registration:
1. New Registration which is when it is first registered
2. Cancelled which is when the registration is cancelled to no longer operate
3. Variation which is everything else from a single journey being retimed by a couple of minutes to an entire section of the route being removed. We had a route that had been varied so much over its life that by the end it only shared about 200m of road with its original registration.
