Totally depends on the place. Some station shots look great with a train sitting under an ornate canopy.

both really just depends on where i want to take pics from honestly, your more likely to be bugged/ stopped on a station but not lineside.

All depends on the station, you can use some of the station furniture in your pic, especially on preserved lines, equally depending on location you can use whats around you when linesiding, so both for me

To be honest, I prefer a mix of both. Station shots can be interesting, especially as they allow you to get a lower angle on the train sometimes, or with extra features of the station providing interest.

However, lineside locations are usually more attractive to look at, but alas are harder to get to! Although there are no station staff to bug you, you're more likely to get bricked/knifed/egged than you are at a staffed station. Safety in numbers of course.

IMHO I prefer both, as you get the station feel to the train as it's either pulling in, stationary or pulling out. Lineside is good as well, as then you can get some much better pictures and videos. Take for example my Lineside by the west coast mainline video (Click the link to see it if you haven't). This is my number two most viewed videos on my youtube, as it's lineside to the WCML, and has had many views on it as well. It also has a 5 star rating. But I do a lot of station shots, as there aren't that many places where I live to get pictures.

no it was a Saturday, but all the freight had gone by before I got there

Lineside. Because it's not a station, and you don't people in the way. Though night time shots at stations are nice.

If I'm going to go somewhere to take photos, I usually end up on stations. After the horrid weather endured at Cholsey when I went linesiding there (the rain stopped by the time we returned to the station...:x) earlier this year, stations are preferable as you can usually take refuge from the weather at least there!

But then I do a lot, LOT more bashing than photting!

I prefer linesides, but I spend a lot more time at stations!

Recently found a nice lineside near Ashchurch, so will take a lot more photos from there now

Lineside all the way, merely because station shots are repetitive, although, you can pick out a smashing shot, like a recent one i noticed in a mag, (Pacer at sunset churdling out of a station) But those shots tend far and wide apart. Having said that, its rare for me to even take shots of trains, i get so sidetracked, but when i do, i enjoy it thoroughly.

Forget the weather, weather dosent come into the equation when there are photos to be had
