What are these?

Hey all

today I caught a train from Mansfield woodhouse and saw one of these things (see below) I'm wondering what they are for? Is it a nottinghamshire oyster card? I saw them all along my journey near the Pax entrances to the platforms

They have one of those at Loughborough too. My assumption is that EMT are planning some sort of smart-card ticketing.

Yep they are being rolled out all over EMT's patch. It is a trial of the ITSO smart card reader .

It's an RFC1918 address, so it's not routable from the Internet.

Perhaps we are starting to see the end of the ticketing era and the beginning of the phase where all rail travellers will need a smart/travel card of some sort. I can see that happening eventually.

More than likely, but they'd need to have a big revaluation of the ticketing system. AFAIK you cannot do things such as split ticketing or travelling short in an area which only has a smartcard system - you get charged for the journey you make and not a different journey which may be cheaper.

Maybe we could have a PAYG system, as London Underground have recently incorporated.

No tickets, no set route, just get to the station and swipe your entry, get to your destination and swipe your exit. Charge made, simple.

...or indeed a working one! :roll: Rumour has it the installation of these on SWT territory was a franchise requirement of some type, but clearly the requirement didn't extend to actually switching them on! I presume it has something to do with Stagecoach as they've appeared at SWT and EMT?

I don't see your point. I'm not very good with ticketing, I'll admit it. But it doesn't matter what journey you take, you pay for what you took when you swipe out at your destination station.

If you were caught, then you'd be asked some questions. Depending on the answers, you'd either get a PF or - if you admitted to avoiding the machines - prosecution.

Assuming 3 hours is within the maximum journey time, you'd be charged NOT-EMD. If not, you'd be charged a maximum fare.

That is, of course, if it used a PAYG style system similar to TfL's Oyster system.

However, given the maximum fare would be huge, I think that is an unlikely scenario.

More likely is that it uses the same tickets as present, except stored in an electronic format. Which makes many of the benefits redundant!:roll:

No easy answers I'm afraid. And, with the TOCs in control, you can be sure it will be anti-customer and complicated. But they'll call it "simple" just to wind us up.

If they do use special types of rail cards for these machines there should be ticket barriers, which will prevent fare dodgers from getting out, unless the barriers are open. :roll:

They are definitely on from Basingstoke to Weymouth on the main line, and somewhere else - maybe the Windsor branch?? but only season tickets are operating so far...
