Can a journey from Westcombe Park to Kidbrooke travel via London Bridge or does it have to go via Charlton and Blackheath?

The single fare finder on the TfL website prices it as a single zone oyster fare, so I guess they think you might go via Charlton and Blackheath. An alternative suggestion might be via Greenwich and Lewisham using the DLR as that is also all within zone 3 (thanks to the DLR being along the boundary on that stretch). I'm not sure whether a rail paper ticket is valid on the DLR if services are running normally, but you would be using Oyster, wouldn't you?

Well I have a Z1-3 travelcard so it's irrelevant to me, but the question came up for Mrs. Stifle (who would be using Oyster PAYG). The problem is that there appears to be long stretches of the day during which there are no trains on the Blackheath/Charlton stretch or v/v. The NR Enquiries site says you need two tickets to go via London Bridge, which is probably a hint.

Seems rather silly to resort to the Routeing guide, but Westcombe Park has routeing points Charlton and London group, and Kidbrooke has routeing points Charlton, Dartford, Lewisham, and Slade Green. As they have a common routeing point, that means that "the permitted route is direct via the shortest distance from the origin to the destination over which a regular scheduled passenger train service operates", which would indicate that you must go via Charlton (unless you get one of the Southeastern circle services from London to London via Greenwich, Slade Green, and Barnehurst, if that combination even exists).

Didn't think of the DLR, although that would presumably increase the fare from a National Rail fare to a through fare?

Final thought: I seem to have heard of a three-mile rule whereby you're allowed to take a route up to three miles longer than the shortest route. If that's valid, would that allow travel via London Bridge? I don't have any distance tables handy.

Not in this case. The combined through fares are only more expensive when they involve zone 1. Outside of the centre it's the same rates as NR only.

You'd use up the 3 miles travelling from Deptford to London Bridge and back to New Cross.

Seriously though, I think the DLR option is probably the quickest unless you get very lucky with connections at Charlton and Blackheath. One to watch though is the maximum journey time. One zone is 70 minutes M-F daytime, 80 minutes evening and Saturday and 85 minutes Sunday and bank holiday. The time it takes you to walk between DLR and NR at Lewisham is included.

The best way is probably by bus getting the 286 from Westborne Park station to Kidbrooke.
