On my way back from gatwick airport to weston super mare, tried to upgrade to first class on basis of the zonal map system website includes gatwick airport, so in my knowledge £5 a zone, so £15 for the whole journey, guard came through and said no, started going off saying we don't upgrade! I said its on your website, gave up trying to argue and sat in standard, is he right or not, or are managment at fgw not telling guards right info?

FGW's website says:

Weekend First upgrade
Upgrade from Standard to First Class at weekends and Bank Holidays for a supplement of £5 to £20 dependant on journey length. You can buy in advance at ticket offices and on board High Speed services.

Is the service from Gatwick HS? This is probably why you couldn't upgrade onboard.

It says you can buy in advance at ticket offices or on board high speed services. Is Gatwick to Reading classed as a high speed service?

I would imagine their 'HS' services are the fasts out of Paddington (Penzance, Exeter etc trains). I cannot find anything on their website about it though.

If by "going off" you mean he was rude, put in a complaint. (I wonder if if their Revenue Protection department will pursue the guard for loss of revenue? ;) )

If he was not rude, just feel good about the fact that you are £15 richer and First are £15 less well off!

There's no reason why the guard couldn't have sold you an upgrade as all the fares are in Avantix. The guard has also lost out on a bit of commission by not selling you the upgrade. I expect the reason FGW only advertise the tickets for sale on board high speed services is because most Turbo operated services are DOO.

Was it today (Saturday)?

What stretch of the journey did this occur in?

Did the guard say he couldn't upgrade you, or that £15 was not correct?

I'm sorry, I don't see what might have happened here, every guard in the place knows how to do weekend first upgrade, and is quite happy to do so.
