Waterloo & City line...

Although I do like my trains/travel I am not that versed
in the intricate machinations of how things work per se.
So tell me...what does it matter if there is a signal failure
on the W&C?
And secondly, why is the bloody thing seemingly shut
every weekend when I want to use the line, when it was
closed in 2007(?) for six months for a total overhaul/upgrade?
Over to you, the experts.

It's certainly never run on Sundays (well, not since 1947). Never has done and probably never will do.
As for the signalling, there are crossovers so that trains can be signalled into either platform at either end, so a failure would probably mean they can't be released and the points are set against the train.

Whoops...of course I meant a Saturday. I see what you mean re the pics. Sounds like a perfect excuse to re-introduce the 'Staff and Ticket' system to me.... :roll:

As EM2 above says, it's opening hours are restricted and it's only open on Saturdays from 08.00 to 18.30. I do recall it was closed one Saturday within the past few months for works; I'm not sure of the nature of these but it is possible that there may have been works going on at one of the stations or with radio equipment meaning it had to be closed.

Certainly until the end of May there are no more planned closures of the line.

During the peaks the service runs on a 5-train service, and makes use of two platforms at both ends, so running using anything less than a modern electric signalling system would be a bit of a challenge!

I knew there had to be a good reason! I started working from home two years ago so miss out on the daily fun in the City. I was like a dog with two c0cks three weeks ago on discovering that the Westbound Central line at Stratford now has TWO platforms!
I even missed a train to walk through the carriage and stand on the new one. Sad or what?
It was my Homer Simpson moment when he was hopping from Russia to America.
I'll get my coat.. what time is the next train?

Why? Hardly anything goes on in the City on a weekend. One New Change (the City of London's first shopping centre for 130 years; opened a few months ago) is like a ghost town on weekends, even at this time of year!

I seem to remember in the mid-late 80s, when the old Class 487 stock was still in use on the line, that on Saturdays trains only ran until lunchtime or so - I recall once or twice rushing for the last one!

Aye- it would be a good connection to the East End and beyond. Waterloo manages to be awkwardly connected to many places despite being on three more tube lines plus having the routes through Waterloo East.

The City may well be dead at weekends but the passing traffic and
its periphery is nearly as busy as a weekday now.

The Jubilee line open on a Sunday?? Playing Russian Roulette has better chances, that line has seen so many closures this year on weekends.
