Hi, is it still not possible to get from Vienna to Belgrade (by rail)?

I heard one line is under construction and another was cancelled, due to the pandemic.

I wanted to ride Belgrade to Bar.

Thanks

You are correct.

Half of the line to the Hungarian border has opened, as far as Novi Sad, and now has a fast, frequent provided by modern Stadler KISS units. The remainder of the line is still under construction. At least this part is being paid for and build by China and not Russia so it might be finished on time(2024).

A while back a photo of a room full of Serbian and Croatian railway managers planning the return of cross border services, but as yet nothing has happenned.

As for now that is indeed it-both possible ways via Croatia (joined Schengen and € since this year) or Hungary. The gap is just across the borders from there into Serbia. As always seat61.com-dedicated to having you sit in trains as far as can do, has more details. If a little more broad-minded and saving time: take a (most FLIX) bus (coach) from either Zagreb or Budapest.
I have no info on when this gap on rails will be closed (again).
Also note that its only worthwhile to day that line to Bar daytime-to see the landscape-and in winterseason (that is still on) only an overnight train runs.
