Vacant seats on buses/coaches

I think that some of the gripes on this thread are common to all forms of public transport.
It is not unusual on the NCT buses that I catch, for a couple of people to occupy Isle seats and, refuse most vigorously to move even when the bus is full and standing.
On a number of occasions I have given up my seat, for an elderly/disabled/otherwise unable to stand person, only to find that there are plenty of free seats, it's just that some ignorant person is refusing to allow them to be used.

I'm 6'4" and suffer from various minor aches and pains. The limited seat pitch found on many buses and trains means I value being able to stretch my legs towards the aisle, from my window seat.

However, on busy services I do not 'reserve' the aisle seat with bag and coat: they go onto the overhead racks/between my legs when I can see the bus/train filling up. Of course, other travellers are less easily embarrassed and don't move their stuff, so folk pick the empty seat next to my lanky frame whilst 5'5" students and businessmen keep two seats for themselves.

Somewhat galling!

I tend to agree that other than on city buses, the Underground and 'metro' rail routes, there is a growing expectation that one will have two seats to oneself.
Requests to move baggage are met with visible displeasure and often harrumphing.

When fGW reduce the First Class provision on their HSTs, how will some of their commuters cope with sharing a bay of seats?

The 465 Yorkshire to London is often fully booked. Before the overnight megabus services started I'd sometimes have to book on the more expensive 240 Yorkshire - Heathrow service and get the tube in if the 465 was booked up.

Having said that it covers parts of the : 564, 561, 560, 450 daytime services

Thanks to those who responded on this question and sorry for the late reply. I saw the 465 loading in Huddersfield Bus Station last night and it looked as though there were only a few passengers boarding. I'm guessing that more passengers boarded later on in the route.

Am guessing the seats the last row but one from the back and the second row from the front which both have extra legroom are the most popular on services such as this.

It's usually pretty busy from Leeds onwards. There's usually only a handful at Huddersfield and Halifax (I used to board regularly at Halifax).

I'm really sorry for my rudeness in not replying sooner.
Many thanks for taking the time to explain. I could imagine that it would have been busier from somewhere like Leeds than it is from Huddersfield.

Am guessing that financially it makes more sense to have one route serving all the stops in the area as opposed to several routes which between them might not carry many passengers.

Is it ever possible to see relief/duplicate coaches on the 465 route when demand is exceptionally high?

It's rare but does happen - usually if there's a big sporting event.

The problem is the duplicate seems to have to have good loadings to be worth it - and there's unlikely to be a similar return journey to use it on too.

It's weird i find the seat depth on buses and trains in the uk pretty awful yet i was fine on a Boeing 777 300 on Sunday and yet when i was on a A380 on Sunday i needed to Stretch my legs every two hours.

On one occasion I got a duplicate on the 465 from Leeds. It skipped most of the stops on the way down. Unfortunately this meant I got into London before 0500 having had an hour's less sleep than I expected and a longer wait before most places opened.
