Oooh, I quite like the 460s!
508s and 458s are pretty bloody ugly!

Darth Vaders were originally built without a nose!

I'm finding it difficult to choose an ugliest unit as so much of the styling is governed by functionality; at the front of most units, the corridor connection is the most prominent feature while on the sides, doors and glazing dominate.

However, the front end of 442's, although characterful, are an aesthetic nightmare as far as I'm concerned; the connecting door looks like it's made of 4 planks of wood and they forgot to put the lights on the front. Nice curved glass though.

Of course, in BR days, most styling matters were subjected to srutiny by the erroneously named 'design panel' ,preventing absolute disasters being produced.

Regarding the Gatex units, don't really like them (to my mind it looks like they were trying to mimic Ford's 'new edge' style of the mid nineties) and they look quite dated to me. However, the design is at least bold and different without compromising the function of the units.

A further point worth considering is livery; there are some truly hideous examples around which are nothing more than legalised graffiti. Imagine a unit turning up covered in sprayed on images of Superman - it's OK to stick these on in the depot though.

Pff, 317's are just a bog standard BR EMU tbh...

I'd say the exterior of the 460's... or maybe the slanted fronts of 319's... they're kid of similar to 458's, except for the fact that they dont "jut-out"...

Has to be the 141 closely followed by the 142. The 143 was slightly better IMHO.

319's are similar to 458s because their faces are slanted, however the 458's face "jutt's out" - as I explained before.

Anyway. I saw a few of the 460's today, and must say, that all over "big Apple" livery is HORRID!
