'U' or 'PG' rated films (i.e. suitable for children) featuring railways

Hi there,

I've been enjoying Titfield Thunderbolt with my 3-year-old son recently. He loves it and it makes a nice break from Thomas... I also had a copy of Nightmail and we are getting into that as well.

However, I wondered if forum members might have any other suggestions for child-friendly films about railways. Doesn't have to be British, could be from anywhere. Could be fiction or non-fiction. My preference would be for live action as opposed to animation if possible - I'm hoping to introduce him to more 'real' trains as opposed to the talking variety.

What about "The Railway Children"?

Although it's had a complaint recently:-

Forty-two years after it was released, classic family film The Railway Children has prompted its first complaint to the British Board of Film Classification.
"The correspondent was concerned that children may be encouraged to play on railway tracks as a result of seeing the film," the BBFC's annual report reveals.

Not seen it myself, but I'm told "The Polar Express" is quite good.

I agree with the recommendation for Polar Express. This is really a great childrens film.

Another to look for, particularly when the lad is a little older, is the 1970's Burt Lancaster film "The Train". It is PG but there is nothing in it any child cannot see and probably should. It is set in France in 1944, so some of the horrors of war cannot be avoided.
