Fresh plans to extend Sunderland Metro link into Washington

PLANS to extend the Metro to Washington could finally be on track after councillors unveiled an ambitious blueprint for the region’s development.

City leaders have put together a wish list of developments they will aim to make reality in their vision of how Wearside will look in 2032, from the new bridge over the Wear to regeneration of the Vaux site.

It includes a call by Sunderland City Council to extend the Tyne and Wear Metro network further into the region, connecting the city centre with Washington, along with incorporating the disused South Hylton to Penshaw railway line.

As well as this, the action plan highlights the need for a new station as part of a major redevelopment of the former Grove Cranes factory and another in Millfield to service sites such as Lisburn Terrace and Deptford Terrace.

Wonder if this will ever come off, it is been talked to happen by 2032

As well as extending from South Hylton, it would be good if some form of use of the Leamside line could be incorporated into another link to Washington, possibly joining up with the bit from South Hylton, and thus giving Washington a direct link to either Sunderland or Newcastle.

The only problem i could see with reopening of leamside from south hylton at penshaw you would have to have a station or halt where the driver could change ends to cross the Victoria Viadunt to head towards newcastle. as the land to the east of penshaw u could put a connection in because of the houses thats there.

How are they going to get a connection into Washington?

Personally, I think the Leamside to Nissan is the first thing to aim for.

Here is one question. Why connect Washington into the Metro network when there is "spare" capacity on the Mainline network. Stop in Gateshead (new stop) and Heworth, plus two stations to Nissan.

25kV string and PEP's

Any views

Gateshead Quays would be perfect, by the new college site, the Sage, the Hotels going up there and the future development planned.
Metro on the Leamside would be a disaster - wire it up 25kv build/rebuild stations then you have a way to send freight to increase capacity on the ECML, and a nice diversionary route should the need arise.

Thought I’d share an interesting / geeky statement from the Local Transport Plan…

‘The Metro system was initially to be called ‘Tran-Cit’ before the famous 'Metro' brand was adopted in 1974.’

…good call on the name change!!
