Tyne and Tees Day Ranger advice

Good evening

This Friday I'm going bashing/sightseeing with a Tyne and Tees Day, finishing at Whitby where I'll be staying overnight for a trip on the NYMR the following day.

I'll be starting from Newcastle Central at 08:45, what lines/places would people recommend?

Answer: Avoid Middlesbrough if possible

But seriously, I've never done Durham Coast. Is it meant to be particularly scenic?

Durham Coast is quite nice between Sunderland and Hartlepool, pretty industrial towards Middlesbrough.

I'd recommend Newcastle-Hexham for scenery, it opens up quite nicely after Blaydon.

Whitby is lovely, but you need 3.5hrs for an out and back run.

Worth doing, scenic in parts, interesting railway stuff, but slow going!

The Tyne Valley to Hexham is a nice run, theres also Snow Hill on the Wear, aka Sunderland, metro's and HT 142's and Grand Central HST's and 180's, also short walk over the Wear Bridge, or metro ride to St Peters, just up the road is a Small Railway Museum. Durham's quite a nice place to visit, Shildon for the NRM too.

I'll be arriving at Newcastle Airport at 08:05 on a domestic flight. There's one train to Newcastle leaving at 08:28 I'm aiming for - would it take 23 minutes to clear arrivals?

If you have no luggage other than hand luggage then I'd say that would be doable. I came back from Ireland earlier this year to Newcastle and managed to do walking off the aircraft to the Metro station in about fifteen minutes, maybe less actually now I think about it.

Off International flights it can take a while to clear depending on queues (25 minutes plane to exit this year for me, over an hour last) and arrivals are at the opposite end of the Airport from the Metro (although only a minute or so dash past the Check in desks).
Domestic flights should be speedier.

You should be able to do it all in a day, especially finishing at Whitby as that saves you having to travel back to Middlesbrough/Newcastle.

Metro to Central should take about 25-30 minutes.

Wherever you go you need to be on, at the latest, the 17:40 from Middlesbrough which is a shame as lots of the route will be in darkness. I am not sure you will get all of the available track in and may need to make a trade off.

I'm still planning an itinerary.

I'd like to visit the NRM extension at Shildon and to cover the Durham Coast line. I've already covered Newcastle to Hexham so don't need to revisit there.

If the rover is valid on GC use on of their services from Sunderland, bail at Eaglescliffe then trundle along to Shildon (you may as well go to Bishop and back to cover the line)

If you time it right you could double back and cover both Yarm and Slatburn

I don't think it is valid on GC servives. I've got one of these planned myself in November. I'll be looking to do the Durham Coast, Bishop Auckland-Saltburn and Whitby lines in order to boost my coverage.

It isn't as the route map makes clear however I believe politely asking GC guards usually results in a positive outcome.

Yeah exactly. I've done it myself before now as well.
